As you wrote "Shubha Vela" means Good time/auspicious time, but Vela is not a tamil female name, Shubha is a female name hence persons gets confused and addressing him as madam.

And BTW, while Shubha is a sanskrit term used as a 'female name' with the end letter 'a' pronounced as 'aa' as in aardvark, there is no such word or 'female name' in Tamil as Vela.
