Kulapavana
What is the deeper conception, though? It is "die to live"! It is "sacrifice all for the Center--even your happiness and contentment"!! It is "whatever you do *DON'T* chant the names of Krishna, for he is a thief--he will steal your heart and leave you miserable longing for his association!!" Some people bottom out on liberation. It is a myth that all jivas have a nature of active service to the Supreme. There is a multitude of shanta rasa jivas out there. If we try to steer everybody into the deeper waters some people will be lost and very unhappy. Gaudiya approach is only one of many not only "possible" but also "legitimate" Vaishnava ways. Sometimes it is good to remember that. There are many examples in the shastras of great devotees who had no aspiration to be the servant of the servants - they chose to serve the Lord directly, and in dasya, sakhya, and vatsalya rasas that is very often the right approach. However, the servant of the servants approach is very much the right attitude in madhurya rasa. Sometimes the servant of the servants approach is also used to manipulate people on the material platform. Especially when this is almost the first thing you hear when you join. It is then strangely similar to the "pecking order" developed in many species. The servant of the servant approach is best understood in the context of a guru but for many people it is something that eventually turns into direct service to the Lord. Yes, it is better to save such teachings for later, and for people who can actually make good use out of them.
