Lights of Diwali

TIMES

Tuesday 13th November 2007

Diwali celebrations at Bhaktivedanta Manor went off with a bang with a grand fireworks display on Sunday.

As well as the display in the evening, guests were treated to music, dance, drama and a vegetarian buffet.

Between Friday and Sunday, around 15,000 people visited the Hare Krishna temple, in Aldenham, to mark one of the biggest events in the Hindu calendar.

Councillor Jean Heywood, mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood, attended the event and said: "We had a great day and felt very welcome. It was lovely to be there and the atmosphere was really friendly and fun."

Diwali celebrates the victory of good over evil and is known as the festival of lights. The Bhaktivedanta Players Youth Theatre acted out the story of Lord Rama's victory over the demon Ravana from the Hindu epic the Ramayana.

Gauri Das, temple president, said: "Diwali has been a tremendous success this year. Thousands flocked to see the splendour of the shrine and witness the grand firework display. Diwali is a time when we should all let the goodness within us become fully inflamed and share this with our families, community and everyone we meet."
