Danavir Goswami (Dr. Dane Holtzman) was born in Los Angeles in 1949. He studied sociology and economics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). While there he excelled in athletics and was selected the Most Valuable Player of 1970 (indoor volleyball) by the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and won the international 2-man beach volleyball tournament at Santa Cruz.

In the 1990's he commissioned the establishment of a permanent center in Osafia, Israel to teach Israeli Druze about Krishna consciousness.

I find this bit fascinating. I haven't run across the Druze very often. They are supposed to be fairly secretive about their beliefs. One of my co-workers is Druze from Lebanon; that's how I became aware of their existence.

Danavir Maharaja trained me up as a new bhakti in L.A. in 1975.

I have always admired him.

He has even been to my house here in Floria.

However, I think his followers are a bit off track when they post his accomplishments as a karmi non-devotee as the glories of Danavir Maharaja who is definitely more deserving of accolades beyond and above his glories as a non-devotee sense enjoyer in illusion.

When Danavir was a young devotee in L. A. he had by far the highest verticle leap of anyone during "ecstatic" kirtans. Nowadays they would say that he had hops (no not the grain - player hater). One time that boy jumped so high his feet were as high as my chest. "Dang", I thought "...that Prabhu sure is ecstatic he practically done jumped over my head!" Later on when he showed up in 1978 to indoctrinate us into how Prabhupada was now manifesting as "The Magnificent Eleven", I thought, "I should listen to this Prabhu because after all he could probably leap into the cloulds if he wanted." Hamsadutta owes Danavir a great debt, after all he helped create an atmosphere where Hans AKA Jack London could be the first Gaudiya guru to shoot up a Cadillac dealership. Yep, them was the "good old days" for sure. Now that Maharaja is older, he just travels around explaining to all the good folks how we all fell down from Goloka. Cause we all know all the good folks is still in ISKCON. And that's the way it is on November 20, 2007. Good night and good luck!

I've had the privelige of meeting Danavir Maharaja on several occasions. Notably, an older SP disciple/mutual friend introduced us at a feast, and I sat with him and we had very a nice conversation. He's a truly exceptional person.

It's a psychological phenomenon known as projection...well documented.

He’s as religious as his other teammates are and, in an exclusive chat with The Indian Express after his first practice session, the leg-spinner spoke about his plans on this India tour — both on and off the field.

First thing on his mind is the desire to get the Master Blaster out. Among his list of 208 Test victims, one name has always eluded him, and he knows that he’s running out on time to add that.

“I would definitely want to dismiss Sachin Tendulkar. I haven’t got him out so far, and that’s a great name to be added, especially because he’s in great nick at present. “I have not devised special plans for him, I just want to try my level best to get a crack at him before he gets into his double figures, and hopefully I will stop him from reaching the triple figures in this series,” he adds.

Kaneria bowled long spells at the nets and is glad to take the grind. He bowled to a few of the batsmen outside leg on the rough, but dismissed notions that it’s a ploy he’s thinking about on this tour. “I don’t need to bowl at the rough or outside leg. I will never do that. I am a positive bowler and I will always insist on keeping a good line and length to get wickets rather than bowl negative.”

Off the field, Kaneria wants to take his family to all the famous temples wherever he’s visiting. “I am a religious guy, even the last time I came to India I went to visit some temples, and now that my family is also here, I want to make the most of the occasion to seek blessings,” he says.

There are a few more things about the 26-year-old that is not widely known; he went to the same school—St Patrick’s School—as President Pervez Musharraf and former Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz. Also, he and teammate Faisal Iqbal together played the first match of their careers in the same tournament—Mohammad Ali Shah Inter-School—and both got selected to the Karachi under-19 team through their performances.

Kaneria’s career took off from there, and he hasn’t looked back ever since.

Kaneria also shares a great rapport with “Anil bhai” and is waiting for an opportunity to get a one-on-one chat. “Anil bhai is a great guy, a complete gentleman and it’s great that he’s got the captaincy. Whenever we met, we always had little chats about leg-spin, and I am looking forward to meeting him here again,” he says with a big smile.

If I remember correctly, there is a statement somewhere in the books of Srila Prabhupada that says that no endeavor should be made to understand the pre-devotee life of a great devotee.

 

That is one of the things that many devotees object to about Satsvarup's biography of Srila Prabhupada.

 

I don't think it is proper to probe into the history of a devotee before he became a devotee.

One famous Hare Krishna guru was a drug smuggler and drug dealer.

But, I don't see him or his followers including that in his accolades.

 

I don't see any difference.

Whether one was an NFL star or a drug dealer they are all the same - karmi life non-devotional nonsense.

 

I was drawn to the website with some books of Maharaja that are currently being advertised on the dandavats web site.

As I looked around I browsed into the "about Danavir Goswami" section and was just a little put-off with his volleyball history being included in the brief biography of his life.

 

When a person becomes a devotee be becomes a new person, a different person.

I don't consider that the valleyball champ from Santa Cruz was Danavir Goswami.

That was Dane Holtzman, a non-devotee sense enjoyer that didn't have a spiritual master or a spiritual life.

To include that in the description of "Danavir Goswami" just seems really awkward and improper to me, a person that has always respected and admired Danavir DAS Goswami.

 

By the way, why did he drop the DAS from his title name?

Two Kinds of ISKCON Ecstatic Dancers:

Leapers

Leapers depend on strong hip, abodominal and upper body muscles. You need strong hips to hyperextend your legs and propel your body forward. Strong abdominal muscles and upper body allow you to throw yourself up into the air. Combine all three muscle movements to generate an upward and forward motion.

 

 

Leapers take-off from their left leg (if they are right-handed), with some assistance from the right leg during the first step. Main muscle groups involved in this one-legged jump are :

10% Hips

Good jumper, eh? I lived with pure athletes who were alos devotees, and they abridged the rules too. Remember the football games, Babhru? They cheat bad. How does a brahmacari tackle the preceptor with the degree in tai chi, how does o0ne take out goursundara. And they played on this to the hilt, we HAD to let them win...

Srila Prabhupada played football (soccer). He was a goalie he said because he didn't like to run around so much.

 

IMO the propensity to play is inherent in the soul and much more natural then being a strict renunciant sannyasi. No need for austerities in the Spiritual Sky but I hear they play eternally.

 

I knew Danavir from '71. I blooped just as he became the temple president of my local so I never got to know him very well I remember him as a strict serious disciple and also a decent guy.

 

He is still heavy in the Iskcon system so no doubt we would disagree on a lot of things but I still respect him alot. If I had 1% of his determination in sadhana-bhakti I would not have wasted so much of my life.

 

I think his students and disciples who mentioned his past life can be excused if such a thing is even necessary. I get the impression that he is leading a straight forward devotional life as a vaisnava sannyasi which makes him a very rare soul indeed.
