cbrahma
He is the empowered avatar in the Gaudiya Vaisnava sampradaya. Without his mercy , Hinduism would have no inroads into American culture. No it doesn't follow that Prabhupada is Hindu. It just means the onslaught of Hindus into ISKCON and the West would not have happened without him. rohini108
Huh? So Prabhupada is Hindu now? I think if my mind was inclinded to be such a nit-picker I'd end of offending someone very very dear. SP....one brahmana in South India, in Ranganatha temple, he was reading Bhagavad-gita. And he was illiterate. He did not know neither Sanskrit nor any letter, illiterate. So the people, neighborhood, they knew that “This man is illiterate, and he is reading Bhagavad-gita.” He is opening the Bhagavad-gita, “Uh, uh,” like that he was. So somebody was joking (nit-picking), “Well, brahmana, how you are reading Bhagavad-gita?” He could understand that “This man is joking because I am illiterate.” So in this way, Caitanya Mahaprabhu also happened to be that day in the Ranganatha temple, and He could understand that “Here is a devotee.” So He approa ched him and He asked, “My dear brahmana, what you are reading?” So he could also understand that “This man is not joking.” So he said, “Sir, I am reading Bhagavad-gita. I am trying to read Bhagavad-gita, but I am illiterate. So my Guru Maharaja said that ‘You must read eighteen chapters daily.’ So I have no knowledge. I cannot read. Still, Guru Maharaja said, so I am just trying to carry out his order and opening the pages, and that’s all. I do not know how to read it.” Caitanya Mahaprabhu said that “You are crying sometimes, I see.” Then, “Yes, I am crying.” “How you are crying if you cannot read?” “No, because when I take this Bhagavad-gita book, I see one picture, that Krsna is so kind that He has taken the chariot driver, sarathi, of Arjuna. He is His devotee. So Sri Krsna is so kind that He can accept the position of a servant because Arjuna was ordering, ‘ Keep my chariot here,’ and Krsna was serving him. So Krsna is so kind. So when I see this picture within my mind, I am crying.” So Caitanya Mahaprabhu immediately embraced him, that “You are reading Bhagavad-gita. Without any education, you are reading Bhagavad-gita.” He embraced him.
raghu
I think if my mind was inclinded to be such a nit-picker I'd end of offending someone very very dear. I really don't know what this has to do with anything. My question was in regards to why, after cbrahma et. al. spent so much time distancing their version of "Vaishnavism" (and thus by extension their guru Prabhupada) from Hinduism, does cbrahma now claim that Prabhupada was responsible for paving the way for "Hinduism" in the United States? This makes no sense. Either Prabhupada (and thus his teachings) are "Hinduism" or they are not. Either he spread Hinduism or he did not. He can't be a non-Hindu and yet spread Hinduism. By the way, that claim of cbrahma is prima facie absurd. It is well known that other strands of Hinduism had entered the United States prior to Prabhupada's arrival. raghu
I also forgot to mention that cbrahma's claim that Prabhupada "is the empowered avatar in the Gaudiya Vaisnava sampradaya" is an outright falsehood. There is no such claim in the Gaudiya Vaishnava literature prior to iskcon.
raghu
Oh, and anyone who believes that it is "nit-picking" to call into question the obvious misinformation that some people dishonestly propagate in order to prop up their religious beliefs is a party to the same dishonesty. To call into question obvious misinformation is not nit-picking.
cbrahma
“I was thinking like that when I first came here,” he says. “I was hoping that my countrymen in America would be the first interested in a Krishna consciousness society. But no. Generally, they are like new crows, new materialists, delighting in unclean things, in stool and nasty places. Because in India there is much poverty, for economic success many Indians come here to work and study. They generally imitate Westerners buy new cars and drink liquors, eat meat, go to night clubs, and keep women. So there is a saying, ‘Crows eat stool, but new crows eat more stool.’ No. Do not expect any help from them.”
raghu
To call into question obvious misinformation is not nit-picking. OK, so now you are contradicting yourself. But back to the original point, is Prabhupada a Hindu or not? cbrahma wrote the following prejudiced remarks: “I was thinking like that when I first came here,” he says. Do not expect any help from them.” In response to this, I would say that when I first walked into an iskcon community, I was thinking that these devotees as they called themselves would be genuinely interested in Vishnu-bhakti, renunciation of materialism, and sincere study of scriptures. But no. Generally, they are unsatisfied with the spiritual way of life and imitate the very Western materialists that they criticize. They go to movies, eat outside food, buy television sets, and maintain so many non-spiritual habits. They use pseudo-logical arguments to justify attachment to vices like illicit sex. They demand complete obedience from their followers but don't feel compelled to speak truthfully or even to base their arguments on scripture. They promote gurus who speak on nonsense topics like "gay monogamy" and UFO conspiracies, etc, gurus who take psychiatric medications and gurus who visit female psychotherapists. So genuine Vaishnavas cannot really expect any help from them.
Beggar
No. Do not expect any help from them. This is a forty year old quote from Srila Prabhupada and it is obviously from a letter. In a lecture given by Prabhupada in Bombay, November 14, 1974, . Our business is very simple because we take the words of Krsna as it is. That's all. Krsna says, satatam kirtayanto mam yatantas ca drdha-vratah [bg. 9.14]. So we are simply... We don't want to be very learned. We simply want blessings of you all, that let us become so much learned that we can follow the instruction of Krsna. That's all. We don't want anything more. We don't want. Therefore we're sticking to Krsna consciousness movement on the basis of Bhagavad-gita. And a little farther advanced, by reading Srimad-Bhagavatam. These are krsna-katha. And as I have told you, the Caitanya Mahaprabhu says that "Every one of you, especially Indians..." Indians? They are imitating this material civilization. Horrible. Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu has given us open way: bharata-bhumite haila manusya-janma yara janma sarthaka kari' kara para-upakara [Cc. Adi 9.41] This is Indian's business, para-upakara. The whole world is in darkness without Krsna consciousness. Every Indian should first of all make his life successful by understanding Krsna consciousness, Bhagavad-gita, and preach it all over the world. That is the Indian business. So by 1974 things had changed, the preaching in India was achieving success and the Life Membership was blossoming. So did Prabhupada expect the Indians to help his society in the mid-'70s? Of course, and now in India and North America the Indian's are supporting and running the day to day opertions of the temples and are therefore completely dependent on their participation. So what is cbrahma's reason to dredge up the first quote? Then the result is raghu's rant, point, counterpoint. Here we see the madness of the internet. cbrahma takes it upon himself to be Prabhupada's spokesperson and raghu buys into to it and reacts. krsna
‘Nothing else! Nothing else! Nothing else!' Sri Caitanya-caritamrita Adi-lila 17.21-33
harer nAma harer nAma harer nAmaiva kevalam kalau nAsty eva nAsty eva nAsty eva gatir anyathA
hareH nAma--the holy name of the Lord; hareH nAma--the holy name of the Lord; hareH nAma--the holy name of the Lord; eva--certainly; kevalam--only; kalau--in the Age of Kali; na asti--there is none; eva--certainly; na asti--there is none; eva--certainly; na asti--there is none; eva--certainly; gatiH--destination; anyathA--otherwise. "‘In this Age of Kali there is no other means, no other means, no other means for self-realization than chanting the holy name, chanting the holy name, chanting the holy name of Lord Hari.'
kali-kAle nAma-rUpe kRSNa-avatAra nAma haite haya sarva-jagat-nistAra
kali-kAle--in this Age of Kali; nAma-rUpe--in the form of the holy name; kRSNa--Lord KRSNa; avatAra--incarnation; nAma--holy name; haite--from; haya--becomes; sarva--all; jagat--of the world; nistAra--deliverance. "In this Age of Kali, the holy name of the Lord, the Hare KRSNa mahA-mantra, is the incarnation of Lord KRSNa. Simply by chanting the holy name, one associates with the Lord directly. Anyone who does this is certainly delivered.
dArDhya lAgi' ‘harer nAma'-ukti tina-vAra jaDa loka bujhAite punaH ‘eva'-kAra
dArDhya lAgi'--in the matter of emphasizing; harer nAma--of the holy name of Lord Hari; ukti--there is utterance; tina-vAra--three times; jaDa loka--ordinary common people; bujhAite--just to make them understand; punaH--again; eva-kAra--the word eva, or "certainly." "This verse repeats the word ‘eva' [‘certainly'] three times for emphasis, and it also three times repeats ‘harer nAma' [‘the holy name of the Lord'], just to make common people understand. PURPORT To emphasize something to an ordinary person, one may repeat it three times, just as one might say, "You must do this! You must do this! You must do this!" Thus the BRhan-nAradIya PurANa repeatedly emphasizes the chanting of the holy name so that people may take it seriously and thus free themselves from the clutches of mAyA. It is our practical experience in the KRSNa consciousness movement all over the world that many millions of people are factually coming to the spiritual stage of life simply by chanting the Hare KRSNa mahA-mantra regularly, according to the prescribed principles. Therefore our request to all our students is that they daily chant at least sixteen rounds of this harer nAma mahA-mantra [Adi 17.21] offenselessly, following the regulative principles. Thus their success will be assured without a doubt.
‘kevala'-zabde punarapi nizcaya-karaNa jJAna-yoga-tapa-karma-Adi nivAraNa
‘kevala'-zabde--by the word kevala, or "only"; punarapi--again; nizcaya-karaNa--final decision; jJAna--cultivation of knowledge; yoga--practice of the mystic yoga system; tapa--austerity; karma--fruitive activities; Adi--and so on; nivAraNa--prohibition. "The use of the word ‘kevala' [‘only'] prohibits all other processes, such as the cultivation of knowledge, practice of mystic yoga, or performance of austerities and fruitive activities. PURPORT Our KRSNa consciousness movement stresses the chanting of the Hare KRSNa mantra only, whereas those who do not know the secret of success for this Age of Kali unnecessarily indulge in the cultivation of knowledge, the practice of mystic yoga or the performance of fruitive activities or useless austerities. They are simply wasting their time and misleading their followers. When we point this out very plainly to an audience, members of opposing groups become angry at us. But according to the injunctions of the zAstras, we cannot make compromises with these so-called jJAnIs, yogIs, karmIs and tapasvIs. When they say they are as good as we are, we must say that only we are good and that they are not good. This is not our obstinacy; it is the injunction of the zAstras. We must not deviate from the injunctions of the zAstras. This is confirmed in the next verse of the Caitanya-caritAmRta.
anyathA ye mAne, tAra nAhika nistAra nAhi, nAhi, nAhi----e tina ‘eva'-kAra
anyathA--otherwise; ye--anyone who; mAne--accepts; tAra--of him; nAhika--there is no; nistAra--deliverance; nAhi nAhi nAhi--there is nothing else, nothing else, nothing else; e--in this; tina--three; eva-kAra--bearing the meaning of emphasis. "This verse clearly states that anyone who accepts any other path cannot be delivered. This is the reason for the triple repetition ‘nothing else, nothing else, nothing else,' which emphasizes the real process of self-realization. krsna
Miss Maya “Miss Maya is so strong,” Swamiji (Srila Prabhupada) tells us, “that when she sees you trying to become Krishna conscious, she’ll knock you down.” He shakes his head and smiles, as if facing an unconquerable foe. Never think that we are stronger than Maya “She is so strong, and we are so weak. Like fire and butter. We should never think that we are stronger than Maya. We have only one recourse, Hare Krishna. When Mayadevi attacks, we must cry, ‘Krishna! Krishna! Please save me!’ Since only Krishna is stronger than maya, only Krishna can protect us. Maya Ceases To Be A Foe When the pure devotee conquers Krishna through love, then Mayadevi stands before the devotee and says, ‘How may I serve you?’ Only then does maya cease to be a foe. Only then is maya seen as Krishna’s smile.“ - Hayagriva Das
krsna
Process is wonderful "Don't think I have played something wonder. No, it is not my wonder. The process is wonderful, the process itself. You have to simply accept; then your life will be successful. It is not that 'Bhaktivedanta Swami has brought this.' They say. They give me the credit. That is my good fortune also. Secret of success But actually I am just like a peon. I have brought, but I am delivering it without any adulteration. That may be my credit. And if you take it without any adulteration and practice it, then your life is successful. This is the secret of success. Chant, dance, take prasadam, live very happily, and look very brilliant, and next life go to home, back to Godhead."
