Hello All,

Vijayawada, the City in Krishna District of Andhra Prades, a southern state in

INDIA is the town of the One of the Most Important Place of Shakthite and

Shaivaite Worship. For in this city is the Temple of Goddess Kanaka Durga and

Lord Malleshwara Swamy (Shiva). The Temple of these deities is situated on a

Hill called Indrakeeladri beside the mighty river, Krishna. It is said that many

years before, the Goddess here was in a ferocious and angry form. None other

than Adi Shankaracharya came here, worshipped the Mother, calmed Her down,

installed ther Sri Chakra here in the temple and banned the animal sacrifices.

This city, Vijayawada is named after Arjuna (Vijaya), the third brother of the

Pandavas of Mahabharatha, who did penance here to receive the Pasupathasthra

from Lord Shiva (during their exile period) and became victorious (Vijaya). It

is said that even if one drop of water of River Krishna touches the nose-ring of

Mother, Goddess Kanaka Durga, it will result in pralaya or the destruction of

the world.

with her trident. The goddess bedecked in Jewellery is the epitome of beauty and

grandeur. Sitting high up on the hill, she showers her blessings on her

festival season of Dasara is an auspicious occasion to visit the temple to seek

the blessings of the Goddess. People credit the Goddess Kanaka Durga with the

prosperous development of Vijayawada. The arrangements for the

devotees are elaborate and convenient. The darshan can be had from different

points to suit one’s convenience. The special darshan can be had from the

Sanctum Sanctorum, in close proximity of the deity. The second darshan is from

just outside of the Sanctum Sanctorum. The third type is from a distance. The

temple remains open from 4.30 am to 10.30 pm. Archanas are performed at 4.30 am,
