Protest over nude Jain monks

Mettur, June 2: Five Jain monks in the nude, on their way from

Dharmapuri to Mysore on a preaching mission, were stopped by angry

protestors at Karumalaikudal about 15 km before Mettur and forced to

take refuge in a factory owned by a devotee on Friday evening, police

said.

The protestors belonging to Periyar Dravida Kazhagam and the local

DMK unit, demanded that the monks be arrested for obscenity. They

surrounded the Mahaveer Chemical Factory, where the monks hid

themselves, and raised slogans till late night. Mettur deputy

superintendent of police Krishnaraj along with the local tahsildar

tried to pacify the demonstrators and help the monks continue their

religious march to Mysore.

However, the protestors were unrelenting and insisted that the

monks be jailed, alleging that they not only practiced obscenity but

were indulging in obscurantist rituals that were an affront to human

sensitivity.

" The protestors say they would have no objection to the monks

leaving if they come out wearing clothes. We must treat this issue

carefully since religious sentiments and political issues are

involved. We are hopeful of a solution before the night ends, " said

the DSP.

He said in any case, the monks were scheduled to remain in Mettur

till Monday morning giving darshan to their devotees in the industrial

town.
