Guest guest
Shantnu/Sudhakar, Thank you for taking the time to enlighten me. Yes, since I sit on chairs all day, I am totally unused to sitting cross- legged. I chant the Gayathri every morning (as a form of meditation). Do you suggest the cross-legged pose for that? I tend to lose my concentration after some time (15-20 mins) - as my legs become numb and back hurts. I tried meditating on a chair, and kept falling asleep:). Felt a bit silly, maybe the discomfort is neccessary to focus the mind. Btw, Sudhakar, that is a fascinating insight into the Bible. I know the popular version has some additions. But I am interested in the teachings of the Essene Bible - that should capture the essence of christianity. Is there a link that you've found to be authentic? or can you share some more? Guest guest
Shantnu has replied it beautifully. I would like to add that When we meditate, First we forget surroundings etc. On going further deep our ear start not responding to outside noises. Next, feeling of touch (to say dont feel mosquiotos etc on the skin). When we enter into further deep meditation, we discontinue to feel even our body. At this stage, if our posture if not sufficient to hold our body in balanced position, we may fall down. This will result in break of concentration and injury to the body. The cross-legged posture helps the body to maintain balance and steadiness. Therefore, our Rishis recommended it for meditation. To answer your query let me begin with a quote from Swami Vivekananda. He said Football takes you closer to God than Bhagvad Gita. Bengalis are lovers of football hence to be healthy he recommended that. If he was a Sardar probably he would have recommended hockey, if he was a Maharashtrian, probably cricket and if he was a Keralite he would have recommended athletics. So in short to meditate one should be physically healthy which will also contribute towards mental health. Ofcourse there are different views regarding mental health but here i am talking about HathaYoga which will not only contribute towards physical health but mental health too. And please do not think you are old and stiff. Any age it can be started though earlier the better. Secondly please take it easy and do not rush for acquiring proficiency in execution of asana it takes time. Patience is needed. Practically 95% of humanity cannot concentrate and remember to quote Osho who said, Meditation needs a very determined heart. The wavering mind is incapable of going into meditation. It needs an unwavering perseverance because it takes time. For many lives we have lived non-meditatively that it has become almost our second nature. So what is the alternative? When you sit for meditation hold Gyan Mudra which is performed by touching the tip of the thumb with the tip of the forefinger and keeping other 3 fingers straight with palms facing upward. Do this with both hands. In the begining you won't be able to hold for more then 5 minutes but persistent practice always helps. Alternatively you can also tie rubber band to hold the mudra. Next to stabilise mind do Jeeva Bandha i.e. touch the tip of the tongue to the roof of the mouth just behind the front two teeth. Now you will ask then how do you recite Gayatri mantra. Recite it mentally as saints refer to it as reciting with the tongue of the soul. Further be regular & always have light night meals so that it gets digested halfway before you sleep then you will find sleep not bothering you much. Still if you need a boost consume Brahmi leaves in the morning and if you find it is not palatable then go for Shankapushpi solution sold by many ayurvedic companies. Regarding Essene Bible the book is written by Edmond Bordeaux Szekely, The Essene Gospel of Peace, Book one, International Biogenic Society, 1981. You should get it at Amazon.com. Sorry i do not know of any links on it. If you need further doubt cleared please do not hesistate to ask. With warm wishes, Sudhakar HARI OM TAT SAT!
