|om|Dear Narasimha, namaste

In addition to Sharad's question (I think dried cow-dung cake is acceptable), I would like to ask that by dried coconut, do you mean the coconut shell or the coconut (copra)?

I inaugurated my attempt to do Ganesha homam on the day of the solar eclipse (Monday 26 January around 12.15 pm) but it didnt turn out very well.

best regards

Hari

Dear Narsimha-ji,

Is it okay if cow-dung cakes are used instead of dried coconut to

perform any Homam ?

Sharad

Namaste,

Dried cow-dung cakes are a very auspicious substance to use in homam. They are readily available in India, but very difficult to find in the west.

By dry coconut, I mean copra and not the coconut shell. The shell can be used, but it generates a lot of smoke like firewood. Copra (dry coconut) has a good amount of oil in it and hence burns nicely without much smoke. Fresh wet coconut has a little water also in it and hence generates some smoke and does not burn well. Dry coconut catches fire easily, burns well and generates less smoke.

I am sorry your first homam did not go well. But keep trying. I am sure you will make very good spiritual progress through homam and through Chandipath. In the short run, April 9-June 10 is a good period for you for spiritual sadhana. In the long run, Sept 2010-Sept 2017 is the period to watch out. I am quite confident that you are on the verge of a transformation. Keep doing whatever is in your hands, keep faith and leave the rest to Her.

Namaste!

incidently, a month back, one of my colleagues by name Ramesh

Venkatraman, deicided to do Homa at his residence. He has his own

traditional way of doing Homam which he had learnt from his father.

He complained me that it is difficult to perform homa in small flats

in Dubai because of the amount of smoke which is generated by the

wood. I stressed on Dry Coconut and gave my example. i pressed him

to use 'dry coconut' for his planned homa. As the thing turned out

very well for him by using Dry coconut and he later told us that

Homam went very well with Dry coconut. 'Thanks to Utpal' - i

instantly said, say thanks to Garu! i am just a postman :)

on a lighter note-There is a lovely Store here, which keeps all

traditional Indian Items. You'll get almost everything including Dry

Coconut Halves (As well as full dry coconut). When i started

frequenting that store for purchasing 1 or 2 kg of Dry Coconut twice

a week, they were very suprised. one day they asked me as to what i

am doing with this dry coconut. i said 'Havan' - looked at me as if

looking at some person from a different planet :(

jovial regards,

Utpal
