Dear Group Members,

I am new to the astrology terms and wants to learn during the years to

come.

I have learnt that the Maha martunjaya mantra is the mantra which can

save the untimely death.

What is the simple meaning of this mantra? as I do not understand the

sanskrit. How it operates? What benefit one can draw by this mantra?

weather listining on this mantra is as beneficial as receiting it?

Please do answer as it is beneficial for my upliftment, as one of my

colleague in the office told me that she get maximum benefit by only

listening to it.

Thanks to all the member of Group who are sending there valuable write

up on variou matter appearing.

namaste,

Maybe I'm deluding myself, but I see a strong similarity between this mantra and the savitur gayatri. The words in the first half of this mantra, and the first two padas of the gayatri have a strong correspondence. It is certainly a potent mantra which will provide true spiritual upliftment.

Here is a translation based on the commentary of the Rishi Shaunaka -- We pray to the eye of all three. (i.e. sadAshiva, who is the progenitor of brahma, vishnu and rudra). He has the sweet fragrance (earned by the punya of his good works). He nourishes us (by providing us with the shakti that underlies the entire cosmic creation). (Through his grace,) we are liberated from death (i.e. samsara, the cycle of life and death) and are lead to (sAyujya) mokSha, just as the cucumber detaches itself from its plant.

Namaste all,

Sorry to encroach upon this thread.

I would like to share something about the miraculous MahaMrityunjay

mantra. I have always come across different variations in the

pronounciation of the MahaMrityunyay mantra, more specifically in the

word 'Bandhanaan'. I have heard it being pronounced as 'Aum Tryambakam

Yajamahe...Urvarukmiva Bandhanaam', 'Bandhanaat' and 'Bandhanaan'. I

have no clue as to what part of the Rig Veda to look for - to verify

the correct sanskrit word. So, I have always pronounced it with a

silent 'aan' at the end just because it 'felt' right. (Still don't

know if it's right) But it has nevertheless, always produced

positive results especially in regard to curing illnesses.

Such is the generosity of the Lord! :)

Har Har Mahadev!

Namaste,

for long it has been a most favourite mantra for me. Whenever i

found somebody struggeling with life & death, i have used this

mantra. I know 2 specific cases for whom i recited this mantra, one

was a cancer patient and other was in very critical condition due to

grave bike-truck accident. i am happy to note that both are alive.

(its not that because of my recitation-;)

i've a faith in this mantra and instinctively recite when somebody

is in serious physical trouble.

I recite " bandhanaat " -

By the way, shri Sanjay rath has given a meaning in his book on

vedic remedies.

wish you all a very happy Ramkrishna Birth day (english date wise)

Namaste,

It is a "sandhi" that occurs there.

.......... urvaarukamiva bandhanaat + mrutyoH + .........................

In this case, you pronounce the word as bandhanaan since the 'm' syllable follows 't' syllable.

Namaste friends,

That is correct. You can pronounce it in two ways:

(1) "bandhanaanmrityormuksheeya" as one word without any pauses/gaps between bandhanaan and mrityo.

(2) "bandhanaat (small gap/pause) mrityormuksheeya" as broken into two words.

If you can manage (1), it is the best. If you cannot, go for (2). But do NOT pronounce it as "bandhanaan (small gap/pause) mrityormuksheeya".

Dear Group Members,

The following is the meaning given to me by my named Guru Shri

Bhooshan Priya Ji.

'This is what the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra means:

Sukracharya said " The first pada is Triyambakam Yajamahe and means -

we worship or sing the praise of Lord Trayambaka. Tryambaka is the

name of Lord Shiva as the father of the three worlds - bhu, bhuva

and svarga lokas. He is the father and lord of the three mandala's -

Surya, Soma and Agni mandala. He is Maheswara, the lord of the three

Guna's - Satva, Rajas and Tamas. He is the Sadashiva, the teacher of

the three tatvas - Atma tatva, Vidya tatva and Shiva tatva. He is

the father (cause and source) of the three energies (agni) -

Aavahaniya, Garhapatya and Dakshinagni. He is the father of all

physical creation through the three murti bhuta - Prithvi (solid),

Jala (liquid) and Tejas or agni (energy). He is the lord of the

three heavens created by the dominance of the three Gunas - Rajas

(Brahma), Satva (Vishnu) and Tamas (Shiva). Know Him to be the

nirakara (formless) Sadashiva as He is above this physical mode and

is their Maheswara. This is the first foot of the mantra (composed

of eight syllables). "

" The second pada of the mantra, " continued Sukracharya, " is

Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam. Sugandhim refers to the fragrance of the

flower that spreads in all directions, and in a similar way Shiva is

present in the entire creation, both animate and inanimate. In all

the bhutas (modes of existence), in the three Gunas (nature of

creation as being Satva, Rajas or Tamas), in the ten indriyas (five

gyana-indriyas or senses and five karma-indriyas or organs of

action), in all the devas (33 devas are the source of all

illumination and enlightenment) and the ganas (hosts of demi-gods),

Shiva exists and pervades as the illumine atma (soul) and is their

essence. Pustivardhanam is now being explained. That inward dwelling

spirit (atman), the Purusha Shiva is the real sustainer of Prakriti

(and not vice-versa as all people perceive). Starting with the

mahatatva (primordial state of matter/energy) to the individual

parts of creation, the entire sustenance of the physically created

beings (both animate and inanimate) is done by the imperishable

Purusha. You, I, Brahma, Vishnu, the Munis and even Indra & devas

are maintained/sustained (by the atma and that is Him). Since the

Purusha (atma - Shiva) is the granter of sustenance to prakriti

(body/nature), he is 'Pusti-vardhana'. "

Having explained the first two pada of the mantra, Sukracharya

continued to explain the remaining two pada. He said " the next two

pada (consisting of sixteen syllables) is Urvarukamiva Bandhanam

Mrityormukshiya mamritat meaning - Prabhu! just as the ripe cucumber

is severed from the bondage of the creeper, in the same manner may

we be delivered from death for the sake of immortality (moksha).

Rudra deva is like amrita (nectar of immortality). Those who worship

Him with good karma, penance and repentance, meditation,

contemplation, prayer or praise, will surely renewed life and vigor.

The strength of truth force (in this mantra) is such that Lord Shiva

shall definitely free the worshipper from the bondage of death

because Shiva alone is the giver of bondage and moksha.

This is the Mritasanjivani mantra and has the power to give back

life and rescue from death and great evils. You should adore Lord

Shiva and recite this mantra. Water sanctified with this mantra

should be drunk all the time. [Authors note: It is well known that

the rudraksha bead is placed in a glass of water after being held in

the palm during the recitation of the mantra. this water is drunk

during the day.]

Oblations in the sacrificial fire with this mantra is very

purifying. Now I shall teach the dhyana for the mantra. " Saying so,

Sukracharya started reciting the shlokas for meditating on Lord

Shiva.'

Trust this is also available for the general viewing and clarity for

the members of the Group

Thank you all for providing your valuable view on the matter and

enligten me on the subject

Ganesh ji,

It was the amazing piece of explanation of MahaMritunjaya Mantra.

Thanks to you, your Guru and Shukracharya !

I would mention another meaning of a part of the mantra, out of my

memory, which is also held correct by scholars.

>Urvarukamiva Bandhanam

>Mrityormukshiya mamritat meaning

I am seized by a 'Great enemy' (Urva Rukamiva). hey prabhu rescue me

from this bondage of Mritu (Cycle of life death) by giving me Your

Amrita.

Thank you again!

Warm Regards,

Dear Group Members,The following is the meaning given to me by my named Guru Shri Bhooshan Priya Ji. 'This is what the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra means:Sukracharya said "The first pada is Triyambakam Yajamahe and means -we worship or sing the praise of Lord Trayambaka. Tryambaka is the name of Lord Shiva as the father of the three worlds - bhu, bhuva and svarga lokas. He is the father and lord of the three mandala's - Surya, Soma and Agni mandala. He is Maheswara, the lord of the three Guna's - Satva, Rajas and Tamas. He is the Sadashiva, the teacher of the three tatvas - Atma tatva, Vidya tatva and Shiva tatva. He is the father (cause and source) of the three energies (agni) - Aavahaniya, Garhapatya and Dakshinagni. He is the father of all physical creation through the three murti bhuta - Prithvi (solid), Jala (liquid) and Tejas or agni (energy). He is the lord of the three

heavens created by the dominance of the three Gunas - Rajas (Brahma), Satva (Vishnu) and Tamas (Shiva). Know Him to be the nirakara (formless) Sadashiva as He is above this physical mode and is their Maheswara. This is the first foot of the mantra (composed of eight syllables).""The second pada of the mantra," continued Sukracharya, "is Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam. Sugandhim refers to the fragrance of the flower that spreads in all directions, and in a similar way Shiva is present in the entire creation, both animate and inanimate. In all the bhutas (modes of existence), in the three Gunas (nature of creation as being Satva, Rajas or Tamas), in the ten indriyas (five gyana-indriyas or senses and five karma-indriyas or organs of action), in all the devas (33 devas are the source of all illumination and enlightenment) and the ganas (hosts of demi-gods), Shiva exists and pervades as the illumine

atma (soul) and is their essence. Pustivardhanam is now being explained. That inward dwelling spirit (atman), the Purusha Shiva is the real sustainer of Prakriti (and not vice-versa as all people perceive). Starting with the mahatatva (primordial state of matter/energy) to the individual parts of creation, the entire sustenance of the physically created beings (both animate and inanimate) is done by the imperishable Purusha. You, I, Brahma, Vishnu, the Munis and even Indra & devas are maintained/sustaine d (by the atma and that is Him). Since the Purusha (atma - Shiva) is the granter of sustenance to prakriti (body/nature) , he is 'Pusti-vardhana' ."Having explained the first two pada of the mantra, Sukracharya continued to explain the remaining two pada. He said " the next two pada (consisting of sixteen syllables) is Urvarukamiva Bandhanam Mrityormukshiya mamritat meaning - Prabhu! just

as the ripe cucumber is severed from the bondage of the creeper, in the same manner may we be delivered from death for the sake of immortality (moksha). Rudra deva is like amrita (nectar of immortality) . Those who worship Him with good karma, penance and repentance, meditation, contemplation, prayer or praise, will surely renewed life and vigor. The strength of truth force (in this mantra) is such that Lord Shiva shall definitely free the worshipper from the bondage of death because Shiva alone is the giver of bondage and moksha. This is the Mritasanjivani mantra and has the power to give back life and rescue from death and great evils. You should adore Lord Shiva and recite this mantra. Water sanctified with this mantra should be drunk all the time. [Authors note: It is well known that the rudraksha bead is placed in a glass of water after being held in the palm during the recitation of the

mantra. this water is drunk during the day.]Oblations in the sacrificial fire with this mantra is very purifying. Now I shall teach the dhyana for the mantra." Saying so, Sukracharya started reciting the shlokas for meditating on Lord Shiva.'Trust this is also available for the general viewing and clarity for the members of the GroupThank you all for providing your valuable view on the matter and enligten me on the subjectGanesh Gulati

Dear Group members,

The following message received on the subject which is very informative and

usful while performing Homan

Quote

soma + ardha = somArdha ( half soma). The half moon in the (fore)head. Soma

means moon.

Like that we can see at a number of places the word Soma is coming. This soma

is not accessible to sinful persons, to persons who do not have a pure mind.

Means persons like Rishis have the access to it (with pure mind). Only people

with pure mind can locate, visualize, distinguish such plants which are having

high medicinal properties and coolest in nature.

You may remember that In mahAbhArat, the Bhishma goes to kAshi king and

forcefully brings the three brides, Amba, Ambika and Ambalika and gives to

vichitraveerya. Vichitraveerya is bedridden due to the disease TB. These three

names are the names of three plants in vEdAs having highest medicinal values.

These plants who are able to distinguish, could be the real and purest medicine

for treatment in TB.

The mruthyunjaya mantra thriambakam yajAmyahe suganddhim

pushtivarddhanam...etc triambakam = means three ambAs. It is Amba, Ambika

and AmbAlika. Put them into the homaKunda and do the yajnA, (it will give you

suganddhi and pushti vardhak).

Trust you must have got a small idea about Soma, the nectar availability to Rish

etc

Best of luck

Vijayan

Namaste,By the way, pronouncing "bandhanaan" is not a mistake as you write here. It is the correct pronunciation. The pronunciation changes because of the sandhi as I have written below (vyanjana sandhi). However, in some mantras if you make a mistake in pronunciation, it could change the meaning of the particular word or the whole mantra. Please get a Guru to teach you the mantra so that you pronounce it correctly. If you make mistakes inadvertently (it happens!!), then apologize to the Lord and seek forgiveness for any and all mistakes made. And ask Him to consider the ritual complete. You could recite the following for that:mantrahinam kriyahinam bhaktihinam janardana, yat kritantu maya deva paripurna tadastu me ||puja madhye mantra tantra svara varna

nyoona atirikta lopa dosha praayaschittaartham nama traya mantra japam karishye ||achyutaaya namaH | anantaaya namaH | govindaaya namaH || (recite 3 times)Regards,Dr. Narasimhaswamy Banavarasanjeev_its1989 <sanjeev_its1989 Sent: Saturday, April 18, 2009 3:42:54 PM Re: MAHA MURTUNJAYA MANTRA
