Legend

says that Lord Shiva Showed his Dance pose to Saint Vanmiki (vanmeekam

- anthill) ,hence the place was named after him as vamiyur.Holy cow

Kamadenu once due to curse from saint Vashista worshipped Lord here

with her milk.Once the king tried to capture the cow,while

rescueing,had hoofs on Shivalingam,hence the name Paalvanna

nathar.Shiva had given advice on all diseases and it's corresponding

curing medicines to saint Agathiyar,hence the name Mauntheeswarar.
