Devotees,

The concept of feminine principle is found in some of the rig vedic suktas

like Nasadiya, Asyavaamasya, Devi, Ratri, Durga, Sri, Medha, Saraswati etc.

Nasadiya Suktam, which is a marvelous hymn, is found in 10th mandala of Rig

Veda. It is the 129th hymn which is called “Hymn of Creation”. The seer or

mantra drashta of this hymn is Parameshti Prajapathi. It starts with mantra

“Nasadaaseenno…..” and hence called Nasadiya Suktam.

The hymn mentions quite clearly that that which " exists " before the beginning

is neither Being nor non-Being. In later monistic philosophy, that which is

neither Being nor non-Being is referred to as Nirguna Brahman (in Vedanta) or

Paramashiva (in Tantra), and the individual Atman is equated with that essential

Ultimate Reality. This sukta says that there existed a “breath which breathed

breathlessly”. The entire concept of cosmology is squeezed in this Sukta. It

starts with “Not the Non-existent existed No the Existent Existed” ( “na asat

asit na u sat asit tadanim”). Tantra takes this concept of Creation from this

Rig Vedic Nasadiya Suktam. And thus evolved different schools. The concept of

Spanda or Throb finds its origin from this suktam. Advaita and Shakta school

took a cue from this Rig Vedic Suktam.

Shakta school went a step ahead and took another wonderful Rig Vedic Sukta

into its stride which is called “asyavaamasya suktam”. This suktam commences

with “asya vaamasya……” and hence it is called “asyavaamasya suktam”. This

suktam is pregnant with concept of Srividya and Shakti principle.

Apart from these above two suktas in Rig Veda we can find Sri Suktam, Durga

Suktam, Saraswathi Suktam, Medha Suktam, Devi Suktam, Ratri Suktam where the

Feminine Principle is found.

Dear Sriram,

The feminine principles of devI, rAtri, durga, sri, medha, saraswati are very

clear.

Could you provide some light on the shaktha interpretation of asya vAmIya

sUktam?

it is predominantly masculine with the presiding deities being Aditya, sUrya and

sAraswat all synonyms

there are references to vak devi which ties it to rAtri sUktam but the

underlying thread through out is sUryanArAyaNa and the secondry deity is suparna

(garutaman)

for example in sarasvantam avase johavImi etc..

Dear Krishnamurthy,

I will give you the secrets and commentary of Asyavaamasya suktam by this

weekend as I am on official tour for couple of days. I would give a personal

mail regarding this marvelous sukta since this is a public forum and the secrets

of this suktha is not to be revealed to everyone. Srividyaranya Tirtha has

cursorily given the literal meanings but intentionally skipped some of the

srividya aspects leaving the job to the guru parampara.

Asyavaamasya suktam is the most wonderful and marvelous suktam among all the

suktam of Rig Veda. And it is also the largest of all suktams having 54

mantras. Considered to be most powerful among all the Rg Vedic Prayogas. It is

enough if one carries out the abhisheka to sriyantra with Asyavaamasya,

Nasadiya, Devi, Ratri, Sri and Durga Suktams with proper intonations and proper

understanding of Rishi Hridaya.

With the asyavaamasya and nasadiya suktas one carry out the entire worship of

Sriyantra WITHOUT MUDRAS AND NYASAS. But one must learn the essence or the

secrets of these two suktas duly from a Rig Vedic Scholar or Srividya Scholar

who is initiated in the secrets of these 2 suktams.

Three people Shri Anantarama Shastry Ghanekar, Shri Narendra Kapre and Shri

Sitaram Shukla initiated my gurunatha into the prayogas of this wonderful

suktam. Out of these three, Ghanekarji and Shri Kapre belonged to Rg Veda and

Sri Shukla Maharaj as he is usually addressed is from Yajurveda community. Shri

Ghanekarji, a Sanskrit Scholar at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, later on

shifted to Sanskrit College, Gwalior, a contemporary of Shri Madan Mohan

Malaviya, initiated my gurunatha into the secrets of asyavaamasya prayogas.

Shri Kapreji, a rig vedic scholar and srividyopasaka near Charminar, Old City,

Hyderabad, performs the Sriyantra Puja with this Asyavaamasya and Nasadiya

Suktams. Shri Sitaraam Shukla, a descendant of Shri Shivadutta Shukla (guru of

sri Bhaskararaya) was a great srividya and vanadurga upasaka. He handed over the

Vanadurga and Kiraata Varahi Kalpa to Shri Gurunatha.

So, bound by the guru vakya, I would not post this mail in this forum. I

would give a personal mail to you regarding the secrets of asyavaamasya suktam.

Raman,

Sorry, i donot know your background.

But i would throw some light on one of the the famous rks. Apart

from several rks in this Suktam, there is one famous rik which

everyone knows. This is " gaurih mimaya salilaani...sahasraakshara

parame vyoman " . So, one can understand the deep significance of this

asyavaamasya suktam. The " akshare parame vyoman " is the Vak (The

Speech) which i explained in my earlier mails. This rik is also found

in taittiriya brahmana, aranyaka, atharvaveda. But the moola is in rg

veda. Entire upasana of Vak is mentioned in this suktam with its 4

stages or levels. You can contemplate on it.

For further reference on Vak, please study Devi Suktam of Rg Veda.

Dear krishnamurthy,

Su-parna is the divine splendour of Vak which is " rucho akshare parame

vyoman " . Though identified with Garutman which is the giver of delight in the

form of Soma. This is the splendour of the Sun Supreme.

chatvaari vak parimita padani taani vidurbraahmana ye manishinaha

guha trini............sa suparno garutmaan. .......Rg Veda (asya vamasya

suktam)

Moreover, there is also a sahasrakshara vidya in this suktam.

Garuda is identified with Pranava Swarupa. Shankara Bhagavatpada explaining

the Garuda tattva says Garuda is Pranava while Vishnu alighting the Garuda

implies that " he is known through the Pranava Tattva " .
