Dear members,

The Kala (Time) Ganana (Calculation) during the ancient vedic times is based

on Sa-ayana unlike the Nir-ayana. During those times, the 27 nakshatras and 12

symbols of zodiac is not considered for Kala Ganana.

There are certain hints on our astronomical and astrological issues based on

the Kala Ganana in Asya Vamasya Sukta. The Rishi of this famous Sukta is

Dirghatamas (which means Prolonged Darkness). Though there is a strange

fabricated story around this Great Seer, this is again a mythological secret

like the Daksh Yajna. Whatever may be the story, so be it. But the inner

essence and rishi hridaya is quite different and has to be understood with the

help of Vedic Symbolism.

Dirghatamas itself imply that Prolonged Darkness. The son of Dirghatamas is

the Kakshivan. Kakshivan is the symbolic representation of the Day break after

the prolonged Darkness of Winter Solstice. This Winter Solstice is December

22nd. And the Summer Solstice is June 22nd which is the Prolonged Daylight.

This is symbolically denoted as “Hiranya Stupaâ€.

The Month before the Winter Solstice (December 22nd) is called the Dhanurmasa.

The Ekadasi that comes during this Dhanurmasa is Vaikutha Ekadasi. The advent

of Uttarayana is symbolically represented as the Vishnu alighting on Su-parna

(Garuda) moving towards the Uttara Dwara during the first dawn after prolonged

darkness of Winter Solstice.

As per the the Sa-ayana Paddhati, the Makara Sankramana or the Uttarayana

Punya Kala used to fall on the next day of December 22nd. And the makara

sankranti purusha is called Su-parna or the Great Bird Garutman.

So, this Kala Purusha in the First Dawn after the Dirghatamas (Prolonged

Darkness) with its 2 wings as Uttarayana and Dakshinayana or Sukla Paksha and

Krishna Paksha or Day and Night is the SUPARNA or the GREAT BIRD GARUDA.

Vishnu is the controller of this Kala Purusha and hence He is depicted as

alighting on the Bird Garuthman. This Vishnu is also identical with Sun and

hence he is called Surya Narayana.

This Asya Vamasya Sukta is also called Suparna Sukta with 52 Rik Mantras. The

Prajapathi rupa Samvatsara (1 year) has 52 weeks. And the Mantra Drashta or

the Seer of this Sukta is Dirghatamas. The son of this Rishi is Kakshivan who

is again a mantra drashta for some of the Rig Vedic Suktas.

With Regards,

Sriram

Dirghatamas is said to have been dumped by his first wife and her son

into a river. Then he floated down and reached another kingdom, I

think Bengal, where he married a second wife and had

Kakshivan.Gautamas come from first wife. He is also said to have been

blind. Other stories say that he was Purohita who performed Ashvamedha

for some prominent Kshatriyas.

Which of these story are find a symbolism in and what is the symbolism?

Indian freedom leader Tilak also has some interpretation along the

lines you seem to hint.

Dear rajitha,

Namaste.

Both the stories are correct.

Infact, after being dumped by his 1st wife, he approaches a king and

performs ashwamedha yajna. The king was issueless so he pleads the

Rishi to beget a male child through the queen. Dirghatamas agrees to

this but queen was resistent and sends her maid servant that night.

So, the Rishi Kakshivan is born from Dirghatamas and Dasi. Prior to

this incident, there is also an incident regarding the Rishi Uttichya

and Brihaspati. Wife of Uttichya is Mamata who is pregnant. When

Uttichya was out of station, Brihaspati taking the advantage of his

brother's absence, approaches Mamata for issue. Mamata refuses. The

child inside the womb of Mamata abuses Brihaspati. Brihaspati curses

the child to be born as blind. And thus, Child was born without

eyesight and hence he was named Dirghatamas. The same rishi performs

agni upasana and regains his lost eyesight.

Now, I DONOT KNOW FROM WHERE THIS STORY HAS BEEN FABRICATED AROUND

THE GREAT SAGE DIRGHATAMAS WHO IS THE MANTRA DRAHSTA OF THE GREAT

SUKTA OF RIG VEDA " ASYAVAMASYA SUKTHA " .

That is why our elders used to advice that Nadi Mula and Rishi Mula

should not be analysed.

With regards,

Sriram.
