A comparision of the Shri Muthuswamy Dikshithar's navAvaraNa kIrtanas and shri OOthukkadus renditions would be a good subject for this forum. There is a group called ovkmusic in , run by Shri S. Ravi Kiran of gottuvaadyam fame. If you are interested, you should become a member of that site. Shri Ravi Kiran is an ardent Shri Vidya upasaka. I have heard that Kanchi Mahaperiyaval has spoken with great reverence of this mahaan. There are several websites where the lyrics of the navavaranams can be found. The audio for a few compositions (from Shri Ravikiran's IFCM) can be found @ http://tinyurl.com/6azb6o I strongly recommend that people buy any commerically available recordings of the Navavaranams and his other compositions. Sometime back, I had posted on this list about the Navavaranams, with the following links: http://www.kutcheribuzz.com/news/20001228/kritis.asp http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/2001/01/02/stories/1302017a.htm If one even glances through the book by Shri Sankaranarayanan (in the 2 links above), one gets an idea of the scholarliness of Oothukkadu Venkatakavi, who effectively used sangIta as a tool for saguNopAsaa. He has composed on all dieties, and every composition in my humble opinion is a matchless gem. I think he was drawn to the beauteous form of Shri Krishna and the lovely Rajagopala Swami at Mannargudi. kamakotimandali/message/1267 As a group, it will be very nice if the more knowledgable members take up his Kamakshi Navavaranams for discussion. I have searched and searched but have not been successful as yet. I placed a standing order with Giri Traders in Chennai, but have not yet heard back. The I mentioned earlier ovkumusic has all of the sAhityams in Sanskrit and English as well, so I wont bother repeating the text here. shrI OVK was an example of a shrI VidyopAsaka with Lord KrishNa as IshTa devatAA. Tamilians will remember his most famous compositions ... Taaye Yashoda and Alai pAyude KaNNA are devotional masterpieces. He was a supreme poet and composer. Yet, how many of us know that his mastery extended to Sanskrit as well. As for the navAvaraNa kIrtansas, There are two dhyAna kIrtanas ( first on Lord Ganesha... a very divine song in Shanmukha priyA... shrI ganeshwara jaya jagadIshwara, and one in kalyANI ... vAnchasi yadi kushalam on kamalAmbA ). I am giving below the words of the first dhyaana kIrtanam for your pleasure and introduction to the world of shrI OothukkAdu. My favorite of the nine AvaraNa compositions are the ones in nAdanAmakriyA, ( bhajasva shrI tripurasundarIm .. ), AnandabhairavI ( yoga yogeshwarI ... yojaya maamapi tava paada padma mUle ... ), hindoLam ( sadAnanda mayI ), madhyamAvatI ( shankarI, shrI rAjarAjeshwarI ) punnAgavarALI ( natha jana kalpavalli ). It is said that after shrI OVK completed his navAvaraNa kritis, devi herself appeared before him to grant him boons. At this point, shrI OVK is reputed to have sung the mangala kIrtanam, which beseeches ambAl to show her masculine form in the form of Lord Krishna.
