At the beginning of worship 2) end of abhisheka 3. The purpose is: To drive away unwanted elements; To make the upAsya devata and his/her parivara devatas extrovert (as they are usually in antarmukha avastha) to bless us during anushtana. A simple common sense: When we are enjoying a good meal, how do we feel during that moment when we hear the unwanted external noise? We feel very irritated, isn't it? Similarly, when the parivara devatas along with upasya devata are welcomed for a good sumptuous meal, let them enjoy the naivedya and with utmost humility you seek their blessings by showing the corresponding " mudrAs " .
