is the *ka-Ta-pa-ya sutra*.

 

pAdi-panchakam:

 

pa = 1 pha = 2 ba = 3 bha = 4 ma = 5

 

yAdi-aShTakam:

 

ya = 1 ra = 2 la = 3 va = 4 Sha = 5 Shh = 6 sa = 7 ha = 8

 

kAd-nava:

 

ka = 1 kha = 2 ga = 3 gha = 4 nga = 5 cha = 6 chha = 7 ja = 8 jha = 9

 

Tadi-nava:

 

Ta = 1 Tha = 2 Da = 3 Dha = 4 Na = 5 ta = 6 tha = 7 da = 8 dha = 9

 

The bhinnAksharAs are Bindu & Visarga which are taken as 0.

 

This was was introduced by Vararuchi and hence called *Vararuchi ParibhASha*

which is also called *ka-Ta-pa-ya sutra*.

 

This formula is quite often used to decoding the hidden Bija Mantras in the

slokas numerically.

 

Shri Bhaskararaya Makhin in his *Saubhagya Bhaskara* also leaves the exercise of

decoding certain mantra-uddharanas using this *ka-Ta-pa-ya sutra* which he calls

as *vyAkulAkShara sloka*.

 

For example:

 

bAlA = 3x1+3x1 = 6. The number 6 indicates the Shadakshari Mantra

 

lalitha = 3x1+3x2+6x1 = 15. The number 15 indicates the Panchadasi Mantra

 

rAmA rAmA rAmA = 10 x 10 x 10 = 1000. The 1000 indicates the Vishnu Sahasranama

 

hrIm = 8+2+2+0 = 12. The number denotes nAda-samaSThi till unmani.

The sUtra does not mention computing for any vowel other than 'a'.

While you have used 3x2 for 'li' and, I guess, it is 2x2 (and not 2+2)

for 'rI'. Is there another sUtra that explains this?
