Guest guest
Dear members, A short historical profile of Kali Mutt of Kasi. The mysterious Kali Mutt at Kasi is near Lakshmi Kund which is around 900 years old. The Kali Mutt sports with wonderful image of Dakshina Kali. This mutt is presided by an illustrious linage of Dandi Sanyasins who are highly elevated souls and attained mantra siddhi in Dakshina Kali Upasana. The recent pithadhipati was Shri Akshobhyananda Saraswati. This mysterious Kali Mutt was established by a brahmin by name Vani Vilas Dikshit who hailed from a small village near Kanpur. He belonged to the sect of Kanya Kubja Brahmins. Though a brahmin by birth, like gauda brahmins, Shri Vani Vilas was a non-vegetarian who used to consume fish. Shri Vani Vilas had an intense desire of taking sanyasa and in search of a suitable guru entered Kasi. There he approached many dandi sanyasis for sanyasa diksha. But he was declined because of his non-vegetarian food haabits and being from Kanya Kubja sect of brahmins. Displeased with type of treatment meted out to him, Shri Vani Vilas camps at Dasashwamedh Ghat and challenges the local sanyasis and scholars for a debate. During the debate, Shri Vani Vilas defeats his opponents. Among the opponents, there were few dandi sanyasis. They try to give sanyasa to Shri Vani Vilas. But Shri Vani Vilas turns down the offer as they were defeated and humiliated by him. Shri Vani Vilas decides to take sanyasa diksha from none other than the Lord Vishwanatha of Kasi and commences fast unto death near Lakshmi Kund. Thus passes 20 days. The Vishwanatha pleased with the severe penance of Shri Vani Vilas, appears in the form of an old sanyasi and gives the sanyasa diksha. When Vani Vilas goes inside his hut to offer guru dakshina, to his utter ashtonishment, the old sanyasi disappears from the scene. Shri Vani Vilas on knowing that the old sanyasi was none other than Shri Vishwanatha, sheds tears in remorse. That night the same sanyasi appears in dream and orders Vani Vilas to construct a dakshina kali temple and practice the austerities there. And thus was established the *Kali Mutt* near Lakshmi Kund. In the lineage of Shri Vani Vilas Dikshit, many wonderful dandi sanyasis have adorned the Kali Mutt and attained mantra siddhi in Dakshina Kali Upasana. Some of them are: 1) Shri Ganeshananda Saraswati : A wonderful avadhuta who taught good lesson to the mughal king Aurangajeb in Kasi 2) Shri Hariharananda Saraswati : A siddha upasaka of Dakshina Kali who was offered flowers at his feet by Ganga Mata 3) Shri Damodaranda Saraswati : A very powerful kali upasaka who used to roam near manikarnika ghat during the nights on Lion. The Kali Yantra in the Kali Mutt was inscribed by this great saint. 4)Shri Takurananda Saraswati : A great Kali upasaka. When some of his old disciples were unable to visit the triveni sangama at Prayag, Shri Takurananda Saraswati out of his powers, created three kunds near the mutt and invoked the powers of Ganga, Yamuna & Saraswati. Thus, the old disciples did triveni sangama snana at the premises of Kali Mutt. Even now, one can see these 3 kunds. 5) Shri Vishweshwaranda Saraswati : When the Jyotirlinga of Varanasi was thrown at Jnana Vapi to save from turushkas, Shri Vishweshwaranda Saraswati got the Narmada Bana Linga, did prana pratishta and invoked the power of Vishweshwara into it and installed the Linga at Kasi. A master of Srividya who attained the *identity* with Dakshina Kali. Even the Sringeri Acharya was amazed to see the spiritual heights reached by this saint The present linga which all of us see was installed by this great seer. The original jyotirlinga in inside a well which is nearby a mosque. Like this wonderful parampara of Acharyas have adorned this mysterious Kali Mutt and one such person was a great siddha purusha Shri Trailinga Swami. with regards, sriram
