Dear Subbu,

Swami Sivananda Saraswati of Divine Life Society (DLS) had published

a small commentary on Devi Mahatmyam.

Swami Krishnananda Saraswathi & Swami Krishnananda Saraswati both belonging to

the same order of DLS have commented on Chandi.

Swami Karapatri Maharaj (Hariharananda Saraswati) has written short commentary

on Chandi which is available.

Sri S.Sankaranarayan (a disiciple of Sri TV Kapali Sastry of Aurobindo Ashram)

has published a commentary on Chandi which is also a commendable task. It is a

wonderful book which and can be found it Pondichery Ashram.

If you can understand sanskrit, there is no greater book than the Bhaskaraya's

commentary on it which is called " Gupthavathi " . Motilal Banarasi Das /

Chowkhamba Publishers have printed it. Apart from Bhaskararaya's commentary, it

has 6 more commentaries by

various scholars.

If you know telugu, then Sadhana Grandha Mandali of Tenali, Andhra Pradesh has

printed 4 volumes of Sapthasathi with beautiful commentary by Sri

Sriyanandanatha (Eswara Sathyanarayana Sarma of Srikakulam), a great

srividyopasaka.

Shri Eswara Satyanarayana was a rare gem which Andhra desa has produced in

recent times. His commentary on Sapthasathi is based on bengali work " Chandi

Rahasya " by a great tantrika scholar of Northern India Pandit Shiva Narayana

Sharma. This Chandi Rahasya is an attempt to correlate Navakshari with Gayatri

and details out certain mantra rahasyas in Chandi.

There is also a good work on Chandi Mahatmya called " chaNDikopAsti dIpIka " by

the Muttadhipati of Sankeshwara Mutt of Belgaum. This upasana paddhati is

followed by Karavira Mutt of Kolhapur & Belgaum.

Apart from these, the Rahasya Tantra was prescribed by Shri Gangadharendra

Subramanya Bharati & Shri Abhinava Gangadharendra Subramanya Bharati of Sringeri

Sivaganga Mutt.

Shri Chidanandanatha of Guhananda Mandali has translated the Guptavati of

Bhaskara Makhin in Tamil.

But my advice is to read the Chandi sincerely with meanings (as given in Gita

Press, Gorakhpur / Ramakrishna Mutt) without trying to know the rahasya arthas.

First try to *enjoy* the *divine leelas* of Devi and concentrate on Chandi

Navarna Mantra.

Shri Nilakantha Dikshitar advices us not to analyse kavyas from the angle of

tarka lest we might *miss* subtle message that the poet going to convey.

So, adopt the method of honey bee and try to tap the madhu (rasA) from a

beautiful flower called *Chandi Sapthasathi* and move on without getting

entangled too much into the *sabda jAla mahAraNya*.

with regs,

hrIm namah chanDikAyai,

sriram

namaste Sriram,

Thanks for this detailed and wonderful reply. I will add this to our

frequently asked questions section.

In Chennai - Sri Dr. Krishnamurthy Sastrigal taught guptavati with six other

commentaries to a group of students. It was recorded and I have access to

few of the DSS files. I do not know if they formally released it or not. I

will find this out.

Thanks again.

Ravi

respected Sir

Its really a great and detailed reply. Thanks a lot for this.

I was told by some person that there is a work from shri shankarachara

bhagavatpaadacharya on the same topic.

This was the reason for me to ask about the bhashyam. I sincerely assure you

that I your guidelines will be followed with at most respect

AFAIK Sri Sankara did not write a bhaashhya on this. Often many texts

are attributed incorrectly to Sri Sankara and modern scholars dispute

such attributions. However, even in the collected works of Sri Sankara,

there is no reference to this commentary.
