Namasthe.

Devotees following the Bhasyam of LD would have got by now, a doubt as I do,Why

would Maharishi Durvasa being a Brahma Gyani and being a Shivamsam of Guru

Datta, ever roaming and even not caring for clothes forgetting his body, would

express in His Hymns AD several prayers relating to humdrum or Mundane --

Materialistic aspects of life .

In each of his Shloka, one would have observed that he prays for eliminating

mental worries, grant of happiness, wealth, satisfaction of desires,

longevity,removal mental agitations,peace, auspiciousness etc.

This is also applicable for the Adi Sankara as to why has he departed from

Advaitha, when he composed Soundarya lahari.

Maha Swamy says ( QUOTE)

" that this is purely in consideration of SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT AND ADVANCEMENT

of people with different mental attitudes and as they are PURELY " COMASSION

PERSONFIED " .

That is the reason, Maha Swamy says frequent and regular Chanting of Shlokas

from SD/SL/MP etc bring immense Grace of Ambaal.

Un Quote :

That is in different ways both Bhoga and Moksha.

With Warm Regards

Pranams,

There is an interesting episode about the birth of Sage Durvasa

in Kaliyuga. This episode was recorded by a great Srividyopasaka of

Kashmir Shri AmritavAgbhava Yogi who wrote wonderful commentary on

Sridevi Mahinah Stavah (a gloss on Srividya by Durvasa) and Shri

Nityanandanatha.

BIRTH OF DURVASA IN KALI YUGA

There is a historical aspect behind the birth of Sage Durvasa which was recorded

by a great Srividyopasaka of Kashmir Shri AmritavAgbhava Yogi who had a divine

vision of Sage Durvasa and under the guidance of this Sage Durvasa, came all the

way to Kanchipuram to have the grace of Kamakshi. Shri AmritavAgbhava Yogi

also made a portrait of Sage Durvasa based upon his vision. This portrait looks

similar to Sage Arunagiri Yogi of Tiruvannamalai which Bhasma besmeared all over

his body and a small tattered kaupina.

This great Kashmiri Saint Shri AmritavAgbhava Yogi wrote a commentary on Shakti

(Devi) Mahimnah Stavah which was composed by Sage Durvasa.

In the introduction, an account of the birth of Durvasa is given as:

**************************

Once upon a time, there lived a dravida brahmin couple in the Kingdom of pAndya

rAja. They were very pious and performed nityakarmas to the core. They had all

the joys of the family life but were issueless. They prayed to paramasiva for a

child. One day when they were walking amidst the banana grove, they found some

of the trees were uprooted. Amidst the uprooted banana trees, they found a cut

large banana flower / banana blossom with banana leaves

covered. The dravida brahmin couple thought of carrying that banana flower but

to their utter surprise, found a an infant brahmin boy with bhasma, rudraksha &

kaupina. Their joy knew no bounds. The couple asked his name. There was no

reply. They asked him again & again. But the lad kept quiet. The couple was

disappointed.

Meanwhile, a priest from a local siva temple was passing by. The couple called

the priest and told the entire episode. The priest questioned the whereabouts

of the lad and asked him the name. The lad made a gesture and pointed his index

figure towards the Durvasa Asrama of Arunachala Hill. Upon asking the details,

the lad

revealed his birth secret saying that his parents were Arunachala &

Apitakuchamba and upon the directions of Sage Durvasa, incarnated to teach the

principles of Srividya.

*****************************

It was this young lad who incarnated with the aspect of Durvasa was later named

as " SatyavAsan " by the brahmin couple. This young lad later became a great yogi

who was none other than " Arunagiri yogi " (not to be confused with Arunagiri

Nathar of Periyapuranam).

The original name of this siddha can be traced in PARASAMBHU MAHIMNAH STAVAH

which is a gloss on Saivism by Sage Durvasa alias Arunagiri Yogi. (Please refer

the Sloka No. 139 of Parasambhumahimnah Stavah " Durvasah Satyavasah Kanakagiri

raham….. " ). Sri Arunagiri Yogi established the Siva Linga at the Arunachala Hill

and constructed a temple. Prior to Arunagiri Yogi, the Arunachala Hill, itself,

was being worshipped as the Arunachala Linga. He compiled the " Kalpoktha Siva

Puja " as per the " Kamika Agama " and established a code of worship for

Arunachaleshwara Linga which is followed till today by the dikshitars.

The Pujaris of Arunachaleshwara Linga while worshipping the Linga uses one of

the dhyana slokas daily. It is the dhyana sloka of Arunagairi Yogi.

" Lalate Traipundri – Nitalakruta Kasturi Tilakah

Sphuranmaalaadharah – sphurita kati kaupina vasanah

Dadhano dustaaram – Sirasi phaniraajam Sasikalaam

Pradipah Sarvesham – Arunagiri Yogi Vijayate " .

This great sage has to his credit 3 works i) Aryadwishati (213 couplets in arya

metre) ii) Sridevi (shakti / tripura) Mahimnah Stavah iii) Parasambhu Mahimnah

Stavah.

One can see the Samadhi of this great yogi behind the Arunachaleshwar Linga at

the path of Giri Pradakshina. A small ashrama is also dedicated to this great

yogi called " Durvasa Ashrama " .

Sage Durvasa has to his credit compilation of Srividya Navavarana Kalpoktha

Srichakra Archana Paddhati which is called " Saubhagya Chintamani Kalpah " . The

srichakra archana paddhati prescribed in this Kalpa is followed till date at the

temple of Kamakshi Parabhattarika of Kanchipuram. He is also said to have

installed Srichakra in front of Kamakshi at Kanchipuram.

Even to this day, if one is sincere enough, one can have the glimpse of this

Yogi who visits Devi Kamakshi at the time of the Chandana Abhisheka to

Sriyantra. Such events were recorded by great upasakas.

My gurunatha had a glimpse of this great sage at Tiruvannamalai while doing giri

pradakshina.

With regards,

Sriram
