Guest guest
My dear friends and like minded persons in the Group of US Brahmins I convey my respects to the core intellectual group of US. I do not consider myself as a big man before you all to express my satisfaction on the activities of the group or its formation to strengthen the ties. This letter since is being addressed to the Group and in the Forum likely to reach all persons in the group or otherwise. I have no intention to belittle any sect, or any caste or their traditional observations. I have my respect to each one of you; still I have a feeling to express before you with a sure intention that you will accept me with all the honesty striving for the unity. Just recently I visited Tirumala and when I was standing nearer the reception counter in Uttaradi Mutt, it was around 2.30 p.m. one gentleman walked in and greeted the person in the chair. Soon the receptionist took out a paper where the varieties of ANNADAANA and other donation lists were described. I believe that that gentleman was making himself ready to donate for ANNADAANA, and then he requested the receptionist whether food arrangement are made by the mutt everyday. The answer from the receptionist was “yes”. The gentleman continued and said, “Sir, I do not take food in hotels etc. and it is my custom, can you provide me food right now, I am hungry and I could not take anything since yesterday”. Soon the receptionist asked the gentleman, “are you from ……….Sect?” The gentleman said, “No” and he continued to tell about his Gothra and he described his sect in the Brahmin community of Andhra Pradesh. He also said his pravara and once again requested the receptionist to offer him food as he was quite hungry. It appears that he was totally traditional and with ancient customs. The receptionist said, “sorry Sir, if you are interested you can donate for Annadaana, but ANNADAANA can not be performed for any other sects other than………” The gentleman left the place; surely he must have suffered a lot that day with out food. I am not requesting for total changes in the system and performing of marriages etc though it is most wanted these days, I am just requesting the group members whether the customs which we have adopted in certain cases like ANNADAANA etc., are they really help us to bring any unity? Is there anything we can do to accept people of other sects too? This problem appears to be a major problem only in the Brahmin community since there are innumerable sects/subsets etc. I believe it is time for us to keep up our true intentions before the heads of the Mutts and take their consent to broaden the views. If unity in one caste is an impossible task, how all of us can unite and protect Hindu Dharma? Truthfully respecting the Lotus Feet of Great Grand Father Shri Krishna Dwipaayan Veda Vyas, The Great Sage Agasya, Holy Maharishi Sandeepani and Vamsa Rishi Gowthama, I take leave of you.
