My dear friends and like minded persons

Perhaps this becomes the last one in the series relating to the history of

“Sages” for the time being. The last one taken up by me is in relation to a

great sage called “Devala”. There was a Manu by name Deva and his son is

Prajapathi. His wives are Dhoomra, Brahmavidya, Manaswini, Rati, Swasa, Sandili

and Prabhata and gave birth to Asta Vasus in the names of Ahudu, Aniludu, Agni,

Pratyushudu, Dharudu, Dhruvudu, Somudu, and Prabhasudu. Pratyushudu gave birth

to two sons in the names of Devala and Vibhuvu. Since Devala Complexion was not

that fair he was also called as: Asita: Devala was taken to Bhaavan Veda Vyas

as

a disciple and this Sage was respected equally that of Bhagavan Veda Vyas on

account of his knowledge and dedication to duty.

Some time later a sage named Jaigeeshavya approached Sage Devala and requested

for shelter to complete his Deeksha. Devala desired to show his powers to

Jaigeeshavya and he started visiting unusual places where astonishingly he found

Sage Jaigeeshavya much before him and then he could realize what his powers

were. Then the Sage Jaigeeshavya taught Sage Devala the meaning of simplicity

and its entirety. Some time later Sage Devala cursed one Gandharva by name

Hoohoo when the Gandarva disturbed him while taking bath in a tank. Thus Hoohoo

became a crocodile and was killed by Lord Vishnu when he caught the legs of

Gajendra.

In a puraana by name Devanga, the creator Lord Brahma took the help of Sage

Devala for weaving clothes to the Divine forces and also to human beings.

Though the Devanga Puraana has no authenticity in the Puraanic order of Hindu

System of life, yet, this episode was considered relevant in some texts of the

Hindu Dharma Sastraas.

Once Rambha – the Divine Dancer of the Lords desired to have Sage Devala for her

pleasures which were refused by the Sage. Thus, Rambha cursed the Sage to born

an inferior caste. Thus, Sage Devala was born in Devaanga Caste and he became

the Prime person of the caste. He was blessed with three sons in the name of

Divyaanga, Vimalaanga, and Dhavalaanga and helped the sage to create and

manufacture wonderful clothes for the benefit of the Society and also for the

benefit of the Divine Lords.

The Divine Sage Naarada once asked the Sage Devala to clarify him as to how the

universe is born and how birth and death takes place and ultimately where the

universe ends. The Sage answered Naarada that the universe is born out of and

from the basic five elements like – land, air, fire, water, and cosmic system.

He said that all the five are responsible for creation and destruction. He said

that the body is generated from Land; ears from cosmic system; eyes from fire;

life from Air; and blood from water. Two eyes, nose, two ears, skin, tongue is

the five sensing parts of the body; while hands, legs, etc five are

Karmendriyaas which makes any one to perform Karmaas. Therefore the theories of

body and mind have come to light due to the explanation given by this sage.

Once this sage was taking bath at the Holy River Ganges and then he found some

bodies hanging to a tree like dead bodies. He asked them for the reason of such

a situation, for which the bodies answered that they were the fore fathers of

Sage Devala and since the sage did not marry any one, the sage has not

discharged his three kinds of debts – one to the Lords; the other to the

Rishis-Masters; and the third to the fore fathers. Listening to their plights,

Sage Devala immediately got himself married the daughter of Sage Koundinya.

Thus the Sage Devala was freed from the three debts of a human being. The sage

was blessed with a daughter by name Suvarchala and over a period of time, the

sage desired to perform his daughter’s marriage and started searching for a

bridegroom. He invited many people and asked them to show one person who is

blind and who is not blind at the same time. Swethaketu son of Uddalaka

appeared before the sage and informed him that he is blind and not blind on

account of his eyes unable to see the entire universe and the facts of the

universe, still not blind since he had Gnana Netra – the third wisdom eye which

makes him to see the entire universe. The Sage Devala was much pleased to hear

the answer and performed the marriage of Swethaketu and Suvarchala.

Over a period of time, the Smruthi in the name of Devala Smrithi came into

existence and the sage was considered to be the best Sages who helped the

Society with his explanations suiting the practicality. He is considered, thus,

as the

Sage of first Category of Sages in India.

I am concluding the History of sages at this point though I desire to write

about Nara Naarayana Maharishis and Bakadaalbhya Rishi in this series. Surely I

will come back to you all with some more groups of sages in due course of time.

Till then, I wish you all the best.
