Guest guest
From the poorest of the poor to our senior sisters and brothers who are today's great-grandparents, all of us like independence. Most people like to feel that they can help themselves, because life has proved time and again that there are very few dependable people in this world. But life has also shown us that no man is an island. We have to take and give assistance. Can we find a balance between being independent and not being too proud to take a helping hand when needed? True independence is being in control of oneself - one's thoughts and habits, not to be controlled or influenced by the thoughts, words and actions of others, not to be a slave to the material things of this world and of course, not to be a slave to one's senses. It is easy to see that with this true independence, this freedom, a person can indeed get a swollen head, but this is where life steps in to teach us the lesson of dependence - a lesson in humility. Pride makes us dumb when we should admit our mistake. Humility lets us see our own faults and seek help in correcting them. Pride makes us think we are the smartest, the sweetest, the best. Humility lets us see who is the one who has made us smart, sweet, better and also how to show gratitude. Pride makes us a cheerful but ostentatious (showy, pretentious) giver. Humility makes us thankful that we are able to share. Pride makes us take only that which we have honestly provided. Humility makes us honestly take only that which God has provided. So watch your step, 'cause falling on the PRIDE rock can bruise you badly.
