Guest guest
My heart was touched while reading this news article (The Times of India - 7 February 2007) AHMEDABAD: Street urchins and beggars asking for alms are a common sight at traffic signals on city roads, but seeing someone holding their grubby fingers, cutting their overgrown nails and sharing stories is not as common. This is precisely what Nirali Shah does. It is Shah's way of bringing a smile on their pensive faces. Shah's " contributions' remained unnoticed till Radio Mirchi launched a public opinion poll on street urchins seen begging near traffic signals. During the opinion poll, inspired by Bollywood's " Traffic Signal', Shah called up and narrated her way of making a difference to the lives of these little ones. Shah said, " I am not doing any great work but simply sharing my love for my fellow human beings. Throughout school, college and work we learn everything about acquiring things but we learn nothing about sharing love with others without expecting anything in return. " Most of the time, beggars are looked upon as a nuisance by commuters. Shah said, " We have become so used to seeing poverty around us that we have become completely desensitised towards it.We see them living their hard life on roads and we continue with our lives. Sharing two minutes with them means a lot to them. " Shah's visit to a family of ragpickers in a slum in Vadaj was an experience that changed her life. She went about with the slum girls for a day, doing their job, to experience the rigours of the work of a scavenger. She urges people, " Instead of snubbing innocent kids who don't understand what they are doing, people can at least smile back at them, interact with them decently. " She said, " At first,my different approach got me blank stares from these kids but after a moment of love, they opened up to me. She says confidently, " Until now, I have not had any bad experience with them — they are just like us; the only difference is that they are less privileged. " Shah is associated with Shvaas — a voluntary organisation with no salaried employees. May every human heart be like that of Nirali Shah. She is really a divine angel.
