YOGA [9642]

Working with Shiva and Shakti — pure consciousness and cosmic energy —

as factors of spiritual awakening at an individual level, we will

explore the meditative aspects of Tantra and the inner levels of

Yoga. This program includes special practices of mantra, pranayama,

pratyahara, ritual and meditation, using the secret powers of nature

and the hidden potentials of the psyche to unfold the greater

universe of awareness within us.

Tantra is one of the most misunderstood aspects of Yoga practice.

Most of what is called Tantra is a modern invention with little roots

in the tradition. It emphasizes the sensational side of Tantra that

is more concerned with personal power and enjoyment than the

development of higher awareness.

In the real sense, Tantra is an art and science of working with the

living energies of the conscious universe to bring about balance and

transformation within us. It teaches us how to commune with the

forces of nature both within and around us, so that we can understand

our own nature and energetic pattern and develop its higher

potentials. Tantra is an ecological approach to spirituality showing

how our body and mind interface with the cosmos, helping us move

beyond our human sense of self to our universal Being.

Tantra aims at balancing the cosmic powers within us to unlock our

higher evolutionary potentials and our ability to transcend the body

and mind. These energies of Tantra are defined relative to the five

elements, the nine planets, the ten directions, the three doshas,

cosmic masculine and feminine forces (Shiva and Shakti), and subtle

forms of light and electro-magnetic forces that pervade all space and

time up to the infinite and eternal.

Inner Tantric Yoga focuses on the energetic methods of Tantra as

applied in internal Yoga practices. It shows us how to unfold the

energies of the chakras, the subtle senses and higher levels of

consciousness, in alignment with the Divine forces at the heart of

the world that can change the very nature and structure of our

existence.

We will explore special practices of pranayama, pratyahara (unfolding

our higher senses), mantra, concentration and meditation blended

together, showing how to use the secret powers of nature and the

hidden potentials of the psyche to unfold the greater universe of

awareness within our own minds and hearts. We will emphasize the role

of mantra, particularly special bija mantras relative to the inner

worship of the Great Goddesses Kali and Sundari, who most epitomize

the higher practices of Yoga. We will also explore the role of Lord

Shiva as the Lord of Yoga (Yogeshwara) and special ways of attuning

to his presence.

The program will weave together aspects of both Tantra and Veda,

which contain the key to mantra and Shakti. It will include important

teachings of Ayurveda on balancing the three aspects of our vital

energy, keys to timing of practices through Vedic astrology and

directional influences relative to Vastu. It will follow Vedantic

principles that unfold Tantra as a way of Self-knowledge.

Dr. David Frawley (Pandit Vamadeva Shastri) is the author of over

twenty books and three courses on Vedic subjects including Ayurveda,

Yoga and Vedic astrology that have been published worldwide over the

About The Presenters

Dr. David Frawley (Pandit Vamadeva Shastri) is one of the few

westerners recognized in India as a Vedacharya or teacher of Vedic

wisdom. In 1991 under the auspices of the Indian teacher, Avadhuta

Shastri, he was named Vamadeva Shastri, after the Vedic Rishi

Vamadeva's main teacher of Ayurveda was Dr. B. L. Vashta of Bombay

and Pune (1919-1997). For ten years he remained under the guidance of

Dr. Vashta, visiting him regularly in India and consulting with him

on a wide variety of topics. Dr. Vashta, a graduate of one of the

first Ayurveda programs in India in 1941, wrote many books on

Ayurveda and helped formulate Ayurvedic products for several

Ayurvedic companies in India. He was also one of the leading

journalists in the state of Maharashtra and became an important

spiritual guide for Vamadeva as well.

In America, Vamadeva studied Ayurveda with Dr. Vasant Lad, noted

Ayurvedic teacher and author. He taught regularly along with Dr. Lad

at his school in 1983 -1986 as a regular instructor and has remained

on the visiting faculty. He has worked with many other Ayurvedic

doctors including Dr. Subhash Ranade, Dr. Dinesh Sharma, and Dr.

Sunil Joshi. He works with Dr. Deepak Chopra and Dr. David Simon and

has been a faculty member of the Chopra Wellness Center in San Diego.

He also works closely with the California College of Ayurveda,

founded by his colleague and former student Dr. Marc Halpern. He is a

well. He works with Mas Vidal of Dancing Shiva for Yoga and Ayurveda.

His Ayurvedic work in Europe is represented by Atreya Smith, who runs

an affiliated European Institute of Vedic Studies, with courses in

French, German and Portuguese and programs in UK. Aldo Lubrano

handles the Spanish version of his courses.

Besides Ayurveda, Dr. Frawley has a background in Chinese medicine,

in which he received a Doctor's degree in 1987. He taught Chinese

herbal medicine at the International Institute of

from 1984-1990. He served as a board member of the American

Herbalist's Guild, the largest professional organization of western

herbalists, from 1993-1994.

Vamadeva's main areas of specialization in Ayurveda are herbal

medicine, Ayurvedic psychology, and Ayurveda and Yoga. He has written

several books on Ayurveda including the Yoga of Herbs (with Dr.

Vasant Lad, 1986), Ayurvedic Healing (with a foreword by Dr. B. L.

Vashta, 1989), Ayurveda and the Mind (1997), Yoga and Ayurveda

(1999), Ayurveda, Nature's Medicine (with Dr. Subhash Ranade, 2001),

Yoga for Your Type (with Sandra Kozak, 2001), Ayurveda and Marma

Therapy (with Drs. Ranade and Lele, 2003), and Neti: Healing Secrets

of Yoga and Ayurveda (2005).

Shambhavi Chopra is regarded as one of the most important and dynamic

new women teachers coming out of India today. Her ability to express

the deeper yogic secrets both in the written and the spoken word is

rare. She is able to impart special tools of inner transformation

that can change the lives of even ordinary people.

Shambhavi has written two best selling books on the Goddess in India,

Yogini: Unfolding the Goddess Within (Wisdom Tree 2006) and Yogic

Secrets of the Dark Goddess: Lightning Dance of the Supreme Shakti

(Wisdom Tree 2007). Her books have received excellent reviews from

major India publications like the Hindu, Hindusthan Times, the

Pioneer, Life Positive, the Financial Times, the Asian Age, and the

Hindu Business Review.

" Shambhavi writes with the heart of a devotee, the soul of poet, and

the insight of a sage. Meditating on the names and qualities of KALI

she carries us into the living presence of the Dark Goddess.Kali's

awesome glory and unstoppable grace, reverberate from every page. " -

Linda Johnsen

" Experience the transformative grace of the Goddess in your own

hearts through Shambhavi's luminous vision of Ma Kali in as the

Universal World Mother. " - Deepak Chopra

" Shambhavi's book is the first that I have seen which truly explores

the many sides and qualities of Ma Kali, an aspect of the Goddess so

frequently misunderstood and misconstrued. Through this beautiful

book, the reader develops love, devotion and reverence for the

Goddess, rather than the fearful awe which Her one-dimensional

portrayals so frequently invoke. May Ma Kali's parallel yet

interwoven and inextricably linked aspects of tenderness and ferocity

envelop our hearts, minds and souls, leading us closer and closer

into the lap of the Mother. " - H.H. Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji

Maharaj, Parmarth Niketan Ashram, Rishikesh
