Guest guest
My dear friends and like minded persons / Brahma Swaroops The subject matter is related to the unethical treatment of ladies in Indian Families particularly in Brahmin Families. I request you all to pay attention to this serious situation relating to most uncivilized rituals. It is a fact that we INDIANS respect ladies utmost and no where on the earth we find such honorable treatment to the ladies. At the same time, we still follow some uncivilized rituals in spite of the fact that we have accepted the reforms suggested and brought into practice by Reformers like Shri Raja Rama Mohan Roy, Shri Kandukuri Veeresa Lingam. We could successfully ban the Sati Sahagaman; the society has accepted marriages for the widows, still here is an area where we ALL have to pay attention. Immediately after the death of a husband, in most of the Indian families, the widows are treated as untouchables and particularly the scenario on the tenth day ceremony is heart breaking. On one side the Widow feels herself isolated and remains in total distress having lost her life partner and on the other side, most of the ladies (like Sumangalis – leading their family life with husbands) do not prefer to see the face of the widow. The barber enters the home as some rituals are to be followed, soon the washerwoman enters and removes the Mangal Sutra (the Holy and sacred ties representing the marital state), the bangles are broken, the sindur is removed, white saree is presented to her for wearing and what not and all this – amidst her sorrowful state of mind and physic. The fact remains that neither the sindur, nor the bangles, nor the hair style, nor the saree were brought by her husband. In token recognition of her marriage the only symbol i.e. Mangal Sutra alone is an addition in her life with the entry of her life partner. If after the exit of her life partner, something is to be removed, at the best only the Mangal Sutra and that too she herself can remove if she is willing. I really do not understand the reason for removal of even Mangal Sutra since it is a mere symbol of her marriage, I appeal to the Sanatans not to mistake me for writing all this, but pay some attention to this subject as HUMAN BEINGS. None – including gents prefer to see the face directly and some ritual is followed like putting Jeera in the mouth and seeing the face of the widow and immediately after that taking a head bath as if it is a great crime and sin to see the face of a fellow human being – a poor lady in distress. Now, let us look at the situation of poor widow, what crime did she commit to be banned from the society, what crime did she commit to be ill treated in such an uncivilized fashion and does the so called CIVILIZED SOCIETY READY TO treat the husband in the similar fashion if his wife dies ? What type of Justice have we accepted in our system and who is responsible for all this? The answer is simply – WE – we are all responsible. Let us do something and let us try to take a lead, as I know how difficult it is to bring such reforms – particularly such Reforms. But we have to do something in this regard and if we do not do something – WHO WILL DO? Please think.
