Amme Saranam!

I used to recite Devibhujamgam, believed to have written by Adi Sankaracharya. Could anybody send me a idol roopam (picture) of Sri Bhavani?

Saranamamme!

Dear Spiritual friend,

Purusant to your further query on the 9 forms of Durga. Iam venturing to post this article.

(Brahmacharini the first form of Durga)

Puja modology for the same...

1st female half of Lord Shiva - Sati, known as BRAHMA CHARINI.

Durga's first appearance is in the form of Brahmachari.

Here"Brahma"means meditation

That is,the Goddess is the meditator or a practitoner of penance.

She is seen here holding a japa mala and a Kamandul (an urn containing holy water) in her left hand.

In her previous life, when she is reborn as the daugther of Himalaya, she performed severe penance to have Mahadeva as her husband.

The sage Narada advised her to take up Tapas to win Shiva's heart.

For undergoing strict meditation she was known Bramahchari or Tapascharini.

Ignoring the beating sun and thundershowers, she began a three hundred year meditation living only on wood apple leaves that fall on the forest floor.

She furthered her penance making it even stricter by relinquishing food and water for another few hundred years; as she gave up eating leaves she is also referred to as "Aparna".

Practising this painstaking contemplation she became weak and thin.

Unable to withstand the plight of her daughter, her mother Manoka requested her to give up her resolution.

Shocked at the sight of Durga she exclaimed " Uma! Na aar naa".That is why Durga is called "Uma".

On the other hand overwhelmed by Durga's devotion and perseverance, all the Gods and sages

in the heavens were placated.

At last, Grandfather Bramha , pleased with Devi's austerity, made an oracle: "O maiden! No one achieve and endure the penance you have performed to this day.

I am captivated by your meditation and devotion.

Your wish will be fufilled and you will certainly have Shiva as your husband.

You may now return home and rest.

Your father will come soon to take you ."

This form of Durga gives the devotees everlasting success. Worship of this appearance enriches

the faculties of sacrifice, honesty and self-discipline.

In times of utter distress, the worship of this form gives sucess and the willpower to come out victorious.

Invite the 2nd female half of Lord Shiva - Parvati, known as SHALPUTRI.

Goddess Durga's second form is Shalputri.

She was reborn after being born in the house of the king of the mountains, Himalaya.

In this mold the mother is seen holding a trident in his her right hand and lotus in her left and

she is mounted on an ox.

In the past life she was daugther of Daksha, the son of Brahma. She was known as Sati then.

As the daugther of Daksha she was married to the Gods of Gods, Mahadevan Siva.

Daksha once arranged for a ceremony of the holy fire (Yagna) and chose not to invite

his daugther and son-in-law.

Sati was restless to join the ceremony at her father's house even defied her husband's advice

of not attending the Yagna without an invitation.

On going uninvited to the ceremony, she felt everyone was giving her the cold shoulder except for her mother, who greeted her with a hug. Her siblings, too, were no exception and were sarcastic in their remarks.

The guests who were present at the Yagna were

uttering disrespectful comments about her husband.

To her surprise, her father

But now you have to perform penance for him." There upon Parvati told her mother Menaka that she would marry none except Shambhu, otherwise she would remain unmarried. This form of Durga is worshipped by all Gods, Rishis-Munis, Siddhas, Yogis, Sadhakas and devotees for attaining the best religious asset

After raising the 9 flags, lighted diyas are placed in each of the nine prepared plates. This brings

all the 9 forms to form Nav-Durga, by placing the plates on the 9 yds of yellow cloth.

Ritual is performed by mantras to the procreative energy of the universe called Durga.

Then Durga is married to Lord Shiva by placing a 10th plate representing Lord Shiva on the Yellow Cloth.

Requests are then made to the Divine couple for the rebirth of the Atman so that he or she can have Divine Parents.

This is done by the cutting of the nutmeg which symbolizes the releasing of the egg from Mother Durga then the fertilization of the egg and the "splitting" of the Zygote (Fertilized egg called Hirany Garbha) which is represented by the cutting of the lime in two halves, followed by the breaking of the coconut (dried) which symbolize the birth from the fertilized egg

.. This means that the Atman is being born from DURGA a heavenly mother replacing the earthly mother.

The puja procedure is concluded by the cutting of the banana flower (a symbolism representing creation of children and the

Blessing of the children with worldly prosperity) followed by the bathing of the CUT NUTMEG, THE SPLIT LIME, THE BROKEN COCONUT AND THE CUT BANANA FLOWER with the DURGA DAR which is a mixture of 9 ingredients.

THE DURGA DAR CONSISTS OF:

1: MILK............................For the Atman to receive wealth from parents (from the cow- Laxmi)

2: GANGA WATER..........Washing away of all previous Karmas and Sins

3: CANE JUICE................Sweetness and love to be received from divine parents

4: HONEY.............................To receive proper speech and mantras

5: COCONUT WATER.....To receive proper consciousness and divine thoughts from parents

6: TUMERIC (DYE)..........To receive peace of mind from parents

7: NEEM LEAF.................Protection from spirits and diseases

8: YOGURT......................Good nourishment and bliss from parents

9: MUSTARD SEED.........To destroy all obstacles and enemies

NOTE: Hindu Rituals are not magic. In fact they are very SCIENTIFIC in the philosophy used to correct our lives from our sins or karmas in the Universe. If a knowledgeable person follows the proper procedure when doing a puja, then the puja is sure to be successful. Please note that Kal Bhairo is not part of any

puja ritual, definitely not a part of Durga Puja .

Also please do not confuse Kalbhairo with Kalabhairava. Both are different terms and refer to different deities.

Yours yogically,

Shreeram Balijepalli
