hi members,

i just want to know whether fasting is being vegeterian or vrittam ( do not

eat for a whole day ). When it says we have to fast on particular day for a

particular god, does it mean being vegetarian or vrittam. Kindly explain to

me in detail. Why people fast on poornami?

Dear Member,

Fasting does not mean being a vegetarian. Fasting means not eating or

drinking the whole day. Some do not drink even water.

These days with rampant meat-eating even avoidance of meat itself seems

to be a big discipline and hence is called fasting. You might call it

partial fasting(eventhough I do not personally believe in such terms

myself...either do it or do not...no midways here!)

vrittam(viruddham in sanskrit...virudham means opposed to...that single

day you are opposed to the elements in any way)

The rishis of yore used to do fasting in the 'virudhha' way of not even

ingesting air(the pancha bhutas they used to abstain from including the

ingestion of ether in the form of swaha mantras) ...but these days if

people avoid a Mac Burger he is to be praised as a 'Rishi' for self-

control!

There are a plethora or reasons why people fast on a pournami day.

Some do not eat on a pournami for health resons as Moon is in full view

that day and hence there is a subtle magnetic pull in the body which is

not good for food digestion and creates a reverse negative current in

body.I do not know whether this can be substantiated scientifically

(neither do I care aught for it,as when I had my kundalini trouble all

allopathic doctors could do was to give me a sedative and try to get

me to sleep!)

For me a good reason to fast is to meditate on Amba Rajarajeshwaree in

the fullmoon night in my terrace using a bowl of water and seeing the

full moon in it according to one procedure and chaning a particular

mantra and I do not eat anything that day nor even drink water to avoid

the belching and disturbances in concentration while doing it.

To eat or not to eat is the question...Burp!(Excuse me!)

Yours yogically,

Shreeram Balijepalli
