Dear Rajarajeshwari-Priyas,

This is the third nama of the Lalita Sahasranama Litany. All the credits of the posting goes to my Gurunatha Sri Rajagopala and all the defects are solely mine.

Om Gam Ganapathaye' Namaha.

Srimat means auspiciousness

Simhasana means lion throne

Eshwaree means Goddess of the highest form.

Lion stands for immense power and majesty. Rajarajeshwari devi of Nanganallur has a Lion Flag before her altar.(Simha Dwaja) And it is the ideeka of the temple that one who bows before it will get Her protection no matter what the odds might be against him(even if Shiva is battling against him!)

Lion is the vahana of Sri Rajarajeshwari Devi.It is both a Vahana and an Asana. Vahana means vehicle and Asana means seat.

According to Lalita saraamsa the word 'simha' connotes destruction. She is the samharakaarini....the very word samhara has a close etymological connection with simha. The name of the animal(lion) was named 'Simha' because it is bent upon destruction. She destroys what is created. She destroys what is sustained by Her. It is in Her Aadyashakthi that the trimutis function.

This is borne by the shruthi ''Yatprayantya bhi samvishaanti'' (That unto which everything dissolves--Taittiriya Upanishad)This destruction is only for the beatitude of Her children and not otherwise.

There is also a hatha yoga pose called simhasana.Simha as explained above means 'lion'. Simhasana is consequently the lion pose. Symbolically, the roaring lion reveals the mysteries of Life. The lion is glorified under different forms in all traditional Oriental texts. In India, for example, it represents both the country and the people.

The lion is generally considered as the noblest and the strongest, an example of virtue, greatness, fidelity and morality.

It is rightfully considered the king of the animals. It also represents the image of the father, of paternal power and also of the Supreme Divine Force, God.Rajarjeshwari devi can also act as a strict father to erring devotees.

Every human being has to deal with the impetuosity, ferocity and dynamism of its own "animal" nature in interaction with pure love and devotion. The practice of this asana sublimates the "animal" nature, the human being is thus able to discover his/her profound, supreme nature.

The practice of this asana endows the practitioner with the psychic, moral and spiritual force he/she needs in order to easily overcome the brutal forces and the animalc passions he/she might still have. From a spiritual point of view, this asana may be said to confer a great inner discrimination, easily discerning between the false and the true. This pose makes the practitioner resonate with the essential characteristics of the lion: virtue, greatness and courage.

Rajarajeshwari devi can be concentrated in the heart region with this nama for bounteous results.

The Book of Daniel describes the 'Lion' in a symbolic way and refers to England(while referring USA as Babylon)

(Coronation Royal Throne)

The Queen of England sits on the lion throne. This concept was borrowed long time ago from the 'Simhasana' concept(according to some historians)

Simhasana is a symbolism for authority. She is the Simhasana layakaarini. She plays Her mayavic plays seated on the lion throne in Her Chintamani Griha.

Another interesting angle to the interpretation of this nama is this:

'Kasyapaha pasyako Bhavathi''...Taittriya Aranyakam

This means that if the word 'Kasyapa' is reversed in the Devabhasha it becomes 'Pasyako'.....in other words a 'vyathyastham' is done. 'Vyathyastham' means to infer deeper meanings by the form of a secret reversal. Many meanings in the sahsranama is held gopya(secretive).

If a 'Vyathyastham' of 'Simha' is done rooughly the word 'Hamsa' comes. So this nama is a reference to the Hamsa shakthi in the human body.

This is the spiritual and highly esoteric meaning of this nama. Hamsa shakthi is also called 'Hamsi'(another 'Vyathyastham' of 'Simha').This 'Hamsi' is the pranshakthi(the very energy of 'prana').

Asana here refers to the highest place in our body which is the 'Sahsradala padma peetham'(the final chakra below Turiya). She is the Shreebrahmam.

Dehi Yamdali Parabrahmam Me' Shree Mat Simhasaneshwari!

Hamsa Soham!

Yours yogically,

Shreeram Balijepalli
