Dear Devi-Tanayas,

I finally found some time in the midst of my busy study schedule to dole out some info for you Akka!

Annapoorna Devi is the Hindu Goddess of food and cooking. Annapoorna devi is empowered to supply food to unlimited number of people.

She is an incarnation of Parvathy Devi, the wife of Lord Shiva.

Temple art in India often depicts Lord Shiva with his begging bowl(a human skull) asking Annapoorna devi for food which gives him enlightenment.

Goddess Annapoorna is looked upon as the provider of food and the sustainer of prosperity. Legend has it that Shiva made an agreement with Goddess Annapoorna that she look after life before death, ensuring that no one went hungry in the sacred city of Kasi, while he would ensure they received moksha (freedom from the cycle of birth & death). Annapoorna is Kasi's queen. She is known in the Kasi Khanda as Bhavani, the female shakti of Bhava, "Being," one of the names of Shiva. The name Annapoorna means "She of Plenteous Food." She is called the "Mother of the Three Worlds," and she promises to those who come to her what only a mother can give, naturally and freely - food.

Legend says when Vishnu adopted the Vamana avatar, the sky provided him the umbrella, Kubera provided him the bowl and Goddess Annapoorna, the gracious hostess herself, offered bhiksha to Him. The idol of Annapoorna always has a small vessel/ladle containing Annam (food) signifying that the worshipper is assured of food throughout his/her life time.

My own personal experience when I was in meditation one afternoon before my Srividya days proves this. I can reveal this experience as this is not a Srividya related experience.

In those days, I used to darken my room as much as possible by drawing the curtains and remain undisturbed for hours together in the sweltering noon heat of the Chennai sun.

I used to speak Pure Tamil with the siddhas and other ethereal beings with whom I conversed regularly and found no peace. I said " Yaam vittuvidugirom ivvilayyaattai"(I will leave this silly play of 'searching')

In an instant I saw a young man with matted locks and golden coloured lustre emnating from his skin with a begging bowl in his hand and before one highly beautiful lady of peaches and cream complexion. I did not know whether to look at Him or the Lady because both were so beautiful and I lost myself in just their beauty.

In that scene the young man said in Pure Tamil " Annaikki mun yaamum picchaikaaren" (Before Mother I too am a beggar).

And then he struck his danda twice on a door panel in the space and cried thrice " Yaam picchaikaaran"(Iam a beggar).

The panel opened and the scene dissapeared. I then saw Kasi Vishweshwara and Annapoorna temple.

I immidiately checked the veracity of my vision with internet photos and found it to be the same.

Apparently with caution I can say that the young man who did not look like the pictures like we see of Shiva was The Lord Parameshwara Himself and the Lustrous Lady Annapoorna devi.

I horripilated that moment. But I also learnt a lesson here :

THERE IS NO END TO SEEKING AND STRIVING.

When Lord Shiva Himself seeks and strives to know more where am I ? Iam just a piece of shit rolling in the muck of samsaara and Maya.I prefer to be a student even if I become the greatest Brahmarishi.I decided then and there on this thought.

AHETUKI KRIPA DEHI ME' ANNAPOORNA MATA!!

AHETUKI KRIPA DEHI ME' SHIVAMAHADEVA!!

BHIKSHAM DEHI ME' MATA!!

(Annapoorna Devi in Kasi)

The temple of Mata Annapoorna lies beside the great Kasi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi. It is believed that this goddess, an aspect of Sri Parvati, consort of Lord Shiva, never keeps her devotees hungry. She is the goddess of Food. The provider, the sustainer and the Giver. There are two idols in the temple, one of which that is made in gold is made available for darshan, only once a year, the other, made of brass is open for darshan through out the year.

The darshana of Annapoorna always accompanies the darshana of Shiva Vishvanath. Annapoorna is Kashi's queen. She is known in the Kashi Khanda as Bhavani, the female shakti of Bhava, "Being," one of the names of Shiva. Today, she is often called Annapoorna Bhavani.

The name Annapoorna means "She of Plenteous Food." She is called the "Mother of the Three Worlds," and she promises to those who come to her what only a mother can give, naturally and freely : food.

The present compound of Annapoorna is located near Vishvanath on the opposite side of the lane. Standing in the court of the compound is the temple itself, a small sanctum with a large pillared porch. The image of Annapoorna within the sanctum is a new one, established and consecrated in January 1977 in a series of pratishtha rites conducted by the Shankaracharya of Shringeri.

Situated in the Vishwanath lane, the temple has an idol of Goddess Annapurna Its said that the worship of Lord Vishwanath can't complete without the worship of Annapurna.

MOTHER ANNAPOORNA

When Sri Sankaran Bhagavatpada visited the shrine of Sri Annapoorna, during his stay in the holy city of Kaasi, he composed a hymn in praise of the Devi in eight verses, known as Annapoornaashtakam. This hymn is recited with great reverence throughout India. Each one of these verses ends with the refrain,

“Bikshaam dehi kripaavalambanakari maataannapoornesvaree"

One of the verses describes the Divine Mother as Aadikshaanta samasta varnanakaree. The fiftyone letters of the alphabet from a ksha, go by the name of varna. Varna also means the four castes. Another meaning of varna is colour. The Divine Mother is is soul of the varna or alphabet. The sastras which are based on sabda (sound) are the sound forms of paradevata. Sabda gives rise to forms – visible shapes. It is observed that when particular musical notes are played near a pond, the resultant vibrations induce particles of light dust, floating on the water, to arrange themselves into specific shapes. Thus sabda and roopa, sound and form, have close affinity. This also accounts for the sanctity of mantras, which are words and letters combined and arranged in specific forms. The repetition of a mantra, with devotion, earns for us the grace of the particular manifestation of God for whom that mantra is dedicated. The Divine Mother is the soul

of all mantras.

The conception of Divinity as the Mother is unique and inspiring. In human relationship the affection of a mother for her child is unsurpassed. Similarly, the depth of the Divine Mother’s love for her devotees is unfathomable. The grace that flows from Her is spontaneous and irresisble. That is why Sri Annapoorna is depicted as carrying a vessel containing ksheeraannam (rice mixed with milk) in one hand and a ladle in the other. She is ready to distribute this food to those who pray for it. In the abundance of Her mercy, She gives us not only food that sustains our body, but also jnana that nourishes the soul. When Sri Adi Sankara prayed to Mother Annapoorna to give him alms, he prayed not only for himself but for all mankind. We are all members of one family., being the children of the Divine Parents, Paravati and Paramesvara. It is our duty to love, help, and serve one another.

There is a temple dedicated to Sri Annapoorneswari at Cherukunnam in Kerala. Every devotee who worships at that temple is served with food. The tradition is that in the night, after every one is fed, a packet of food is left tied to the branch of a tree, the idea being that even the thief who prowls about in the night should not go without food.

There is also another temple for Annapoorna Devi in Andhra pradesh.
