Dear Anuradha Ma,

Sani Pradosham or Shani Thrayodasi is the day when Lord Shiva consumed poison to protect all lives in the Universe. When the Devas and Asuras churned the Ocean using the mountain and the snake Vasuki, Vasuki became very tired and started to spit out it's poison. Lord Shiva came to the rescue and drank all the poison in order to protect all lives. As a result Shiva turned Blue and is also known as Neelakandan. Since Lord Shiva consumed the poison on a Saturday Sani Pradosham or Shani Thrayodasi is considered a very auspicious day in Shiva and Sanneswarar temples throughout India.

Silpa Ratnakara, describes Sani as black hued, having eagle as his mount, wields sula, wearing blue garments, blue flowers and ornaments. In the south, the crow is represented as his vehicle. Nala was seized by Saturn and he had to undergo several troubles on that account. Finally he bathed in Nala Tirtham, a sacred pond in Tanjore District near Karaikkal and got rid of the seizure.

All the five Saturdays of the Purattasi are normally spent with 5 Navagraha homas for each Saturday. This can be done in a simple fashion in home with a small copper homakunda. I do like that. But I had some training in homas and vedas. But you can resort to one good book for this purpose(Homa vidhi by Ramakrishna Mutt is a good one)

Those who are not able to do this:

Do atleast one Navagraha homa and recite the shani sahasranama or other shani related hymns.

Tiladana(donating sesame seeds),giving black clothes, black leather slippers, feeding black dogs(or lame or leprous dogs),feeding beggars etc are also done.

(Thirunallar Dharbaranyeswara Alayam)

A visit to Dharbaaranyeshwara Alayam in Thirunallar will do lot of good.

If you are in Andhra then a visit to Mandeshwara Alaya will do immense good to clear stagnant problems.

Srividya upasakas generally do not do much of graha worship except for some important ones as they believe that Ambal will take care of everything.

Hope this slakes your thirst...

Yours yogically,

Shreeram Balijepalli
