Dear Dumkarapriya Vallabhas,

In this Kali Yuga, where there is evil, crime, problems and corruption everywhere, Durga Devi alone can save the people from the evil and guide them towards the right path. She is the destroyer of all the evils and brings peace and harmony in the hearts of her devotees.

She gives victory to those who pray to her in all their good-deeds. During the Mahabharatha war, Lord Krishna advised Arjuna to pray to Durga Devi to become victorious.

Also to successfully complete the Agnatha Vasa, Darma the eldest of the Pandavas sought the mercy of Durga Devi. In Ramayana, Lord Rama worshipped Durga before slaying down Ravana.

Durga means Victory.

The worship of Devi Durga owes its origin to ShreeRam. In the 'Ramayana', as it goes, Rama went to 'Lanka' to rescue his abducted wife, Sita, from the grip of Ravana, the king of the Demons in Lanka. Before starting for his battle with Ravana, Rama wanted the blessings of Devi Durga . He came to know that the Goddess would be pleased only if she is worshipped with one hundred 'NeelKamal' or blue lotuses. Rama, after travelling the whole world, could gather only ninety nine of them. He finally decided to offer one of his eyes, which resembled blue lotuses. Durga, being pleased with the devotion of Rama, appeared before him and blessed him. The epical battle started on the 'Saptami' and Ravana was finally killed on the 'Sandhikshan' i.e. the crossover period between Ashtami (the next day) and Navami (the day after). Ravana was cremated on Dashami. This is why Dashera is celebrated in India with so much of fanfare and the

effigy of Raavana is burnt.

(Patteeshwaram Ashtabhuja Durga Temple)

Patteeswaram is situated around 7 kilometers from Kumbakonam, in Tanjore district in TamilNadu. Just as the Pandyas worshipped Goddess Meenakshi, the Cholas worshipped Goddess AshtaBhuja Durga whose temple is situated here.

With the blessings of Goddess Durga, the Chola princes were able to construct 1000 Shivalinga.

The Goddess is so powerful that since her arrival at this temple, the original temple has lost its prominence and people throng for blessings from her only. The people of the locality and devotees from experience it far and near that a desire cherished in the mind while in her presence is fulfilled on return or soon after. It has been the common experience of the devotees when they worship in this temple, after frustration in various attempts to get their daughters suitably married, that their desires have been fulfilled immediately after worshipping in the Durga temple.

DIVINESS OF THE TEMPLE

The black granite stone image ofGoddess Durga is imposing and awe-inspiring. The face looks so benign that the head of the devotee is reverently bowed down at the very sight of the image as we do to our mother at home.

The charming mother is standing on a lion with the head of a buffalo and the demon Mahishasura remains lurking in disguise in the buffalo's side. She holds Sankha and Chakra in her hands. She holds a parrot in her left hand and the mane of the lion in the right. The Mother has eight hands holding different customary weapons for different occasions.

AUSPICIOUS TIMES

Fridays and Saturdays are very auspicious days in this Temple

The Durga Devi has eight arms and she holds a parrot in one of her eight arms. She is also called as Vishnu Durga and Durga Lakshmi. She has her feet over the Evil Mahishasura, and has three eyes. Her vahana is the Lion. Unlike her usual ugra or fierce form in other temples, Devi Durga resides here as Shantha Swaroopi. She has kept one of her feet in such a way that she would move immediately to protect her devotee who is in need of her help. Her eight hands hold along with the abhaya hastha, conch, chakra, bow, arrow, sword, kedaya and parrot. Whoever worships Devi Durga will be relieved from their sorrows by Her grace. She protects her devotees just as a mother takes care of her child.

Yours Yogically,

Shreeram Balijepalli
