Dear Datta-Vallabhas, Satsangatve nissanghatvamNissanghatve nirmohatvamNirmohatve niscalatatvamNiscalatatve jeevanmukti (Satsang leads to freedom from desire/Freedom from desire leads to freedom from error/Freedom from error leads to perception of the truth/Perception of the truth leads to liberation) Thus, Adi Shankara Bhagavathpada has given a Tatwa-sopanam(philosophical ladder) in a systematic manner for the ascension of the soul. A potter who while making a pot out of raw unbaked clay, makes another one if the unbaked clay is broken in the process of making of the pot with the same Unbaked clay. Whereas the same potter discards a fully baked pot if it breaks as he is incapable of making a new pot with a baked pot. Similarly, if a human being dies in ignorance he or she has to take another birth for the soul to evolve.Whereas an Athma-Gnaani(Gnaanika) has no further births after leaving the mortal coils(akin to the baked pot). AthmaGnAna gives jEvanmukti--this is the "proktham" of MahAtmAs. Now, the question arises who are these MahAtmAs? BahUnAm JanmanAmanthe' GnAnavAn mAm prapadhyathe' vasudeva ssarva mithi sa mahAtmA sudurlabhaha! This beautiful verse comes in Bhagavath Geetha--it means-- After accruing multitudinous merits in many millions of births does one see VasudevA in every atom of this universe and such a person is truly called "mahAtmA" and such people are a rarity('sudurlabhaha') ManushyANAm sahasrEshu kaschidyathi siddhayEyathathAmapi siddhAnAm kaschinmAm vEtthi ttatvaha 7-3There are crores of people but only a few enter the spiritual path. Out of these, fewer still pray for liberation of soul.From these handful of people, only one turns out to be a blessed soul. There are many flowers

but only a few are ordained in ShAstrAs for God’s prayer. Out of these few flowers, only a few are plucked and offered to God and finally only one flower reaches Dattatreya idol's bossom. Even if one steps into spiritual path, it is difficult to pursue till the end. Self realization requires dedication,

& will power, sacrifice, control over the senses and eqanimity. It is said in Datta-chid-vilasam that is for example, Salt-doll,silk-doll and jaggery-doll are tied together in a small cotton cloth bundle and thrown in the river Amaraja,stone-doll does not allow any water to dissolve it whereas the jaggery-doll completely dissolves in the Holy river Amaraja. What Lord Dattatreya means here is that if River Amaraja is considered to be the ParamAtman and the jaggery-doll as our Jeevatman, then it gets dissolved and such "Jaggery-doll" sadhakas are rare(one in a million perhaps). "Silk-doll" absorbs some portion of the water but

does not dissolve completely into the water. Many of the sadhakas are like this. They grasp a portion of the ParamamvyOmAn but do not get absorbed in the unmattA which Lord Dattatreya tries to dole out freely to His devotees. "Stone-doll" sadhakas do the datta-sadhana whatever that might be(seva,mantra sadhana,guru sadhana,parayana,etc) perfunctorily and does not absorb anything of the Parama tatwA of Datta on the other hand he/she gets completely immersed in mundane activities putting up a pretense of

Datta-devotion.These "stone-dolls" ultimately even drop the Datta-devotion sometimes being pre-occupied with the morrings of maya. These "stone-doll" sadhakas are called "baddha-jeevas". Once a devotee of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa asked the Thakur of Dakshineshwar--"Is there not a way out for 'Baddhajeevas'?" Ramakrishna Paramahamsa replied back smiling--"why not? the solution for a baddha-jeeva to become a mukthi-jeeva is to do sat-saangathyam and try to meet sadhus and other religious people and friends". This saying matches what Sri Adi ShankarabhagavathpAda said.(Great minds think alike). Satsangham means not just to go to sadhujanas and not just hearing what their hithabodhas are(spiritual sayings are) but to do 1. Satgrantha shravana--reading spiritual books like say Srigurucharitra for the Datta-apth 2. Satchintana--Right thinking 3. SadAchAra--Rightful conduct 4. Sat-padArtha-hridaya-jeerna--to digest right concepts in one's heart and not give into knee jerk reactions. If these four things are done along with sat-sadhu-darshana and hithabodha shravanam then everything will fall into the groove one by one. Now, Dattatreya marga is a GnAnamarga and Dattatreya acts as the Guruswaroopam. It is said he becomes "dattam" as Guru-swaroopam and guides His bhakthas in the four concepts mentioned supra. Dattasmaranam hi Tarunopaayam--Dattasmarana is the solution says the upanishad and

Dattatreya upasana gives yoganubhava and Dattareya mantras give brahmajnaanam (Mantra Kalpam). Dattatreya marga is for kaliyuga manavas who want to become jeevan mukthas instead of baddha-jeevas. In this context if one makes a sincere reading of Jeevan Mukthi Geetha or Avadhutha Geetha it will lead to nirgunopasana else sadhakas will be immersed in sagunopasana only and might become like the "silk-cloth doll" mentioned above. Just as Chandrabimba(moon's rays) falls onto different water sources like wells,rivers,seas and even a cup of water, the paramatma is in every sentient and even insentient being.If the chanchalatwa is

removed in one's mind Gnaana occurs.--Dattaterya uchihi. If one focusses coherent beams of concentration onto Lord Dattatreya's feet like the LASER beams then one does reach a state of "soham" The feelings of "IMineYou" and "Yours" are all samsaara-karana yukthaani(caused by existential maya) These feelings merge in this path to transcend into the true "soham" experience. Tamil Siddhas tell in the siddha-kandams of their palm manuscripts that it is only a still mind which can get a wee bit of knowledge whereas a troubled mind loses its very vitality. Dattatreya marga is in consonance with this

siddhic thought Since Lord Dattatreya is a great Siddha(Remember : MahasiddhAya Swaha in Datta-mala mantra??) this philosophy of Lord Dattatreya which I have enumerated in this snowy weather of Rochester has been made a siddhAntham and this is called "SiddhasiddhAntham". The siddhantham(philosophy) of a Siddha. Those who take to heart this Prabodham of Dattatreya and practice what has been elucidated will become the jaggery doll I mentioned supra.
