Mother's peculiar ways in other cultures….

The year is 2002. I received a letter from an inmate in North

Carolina prison a few days ago, asking for some explanation and

spiritual consolation. It is interesting to know how he found our

address. He is in the prison for a long time and due to his good

behavior he is allowed to go to the prison library and use the

computer also. He searched for Sri Vidya and Bingo! He landed on our

website and found the temple address and wrote to me.

He said:

" I will never know when I will leave this four walls of this prison

and visit your temple and directly initiated by you. Will you please

send me some materials on SriVidya or guide me where to find

information on the web, puja vidhis and also send me an 8x10 picture

of Kamakshi. Thank you so much for listening to me. "

See, how the Mother works in a peculiar way in other cultures

----

----------

The year was 1982-83 and I was working as an Architect in the….. firm

in downtown Rochester. Architect firms are dominated predominantly by

`white-skin' blue-eyed men. There is discrimination of women,

minorities and other minority groups. Words had to be measured and

spoken. There is cutthroat competition exists in this field, even

today. I was the only brown-skin employee among its 86 employees.

During lunchtime most of us would gather in the lunchroom and eat. I

would warm the food Amma packed for me everyday and sit there and

eat. One of our engineers, a thin, tall blond lady would also come

there for lunch. She worked in the Civil Engineering section. One day

I had to take some drawings of the land survey, utility projects I

was working on to her office. That day she was alone in her office

with her secretary, who was minding her own work. I had an hour and

40minutes discussion with her, handed over the documents and about to

leave.

That time she called me out and said Haran, I would like to ask you

some questions. I said Ok. She told me that it is not work related. I

just looked at her and said, that's fine. Then she asked me, `Haran,

do you believe in rebirth?' I asked her why she was asking me that

question, just because I am a brown skinned person, coming from the

east. She said to me no and she genuinely wants to find out on

rebirth and other related things. Still I was not sure why she was

asking me and I was thinking that she might wanted to ridicule me or

have some fun at my expense! I told her that this is not the place to

discuss this subject and left.

That day evening after work I went to the parking lot, which is 100

yards away from the main office, and sat in my car to go home.

Someone opened the passenger door and got in. It was the same lady

who asked me the question on rebirth in the morning. I was surprised

to see her. Before I opened my mouth to ask her anything, she told me

that she had to wait for her husband for 20 minutes and she would

like to ask me the same question she asked me in the morning, `do you

believe in rebirth? Do you know anyone who has experienced this or

know about this subject?' Studying her and by the way she was asking

me the question made me realize that she is really interested in this

subject. I told her that not only that I believe but I myself have

experienced this phenomenon. Then she started to ask me so many

questions. I stopped her and asked her `why are you asking me all

these questions?' She said, `everyday in the morning and in the

night, just before getting up or falling asleep, above my bed I see a

geometrical pattern in color.' The light would fall at her and bathe

her and she would wake up. She was feeling very strange to see this

pattern repeating everyday. I asked her how well she remembers the

pattern and was it possible for her to sketch it for me. She said she

remembers very well and drew it on the paper. Guess what she drew?

The Sri Chakra. From her description I knew she was describing seeing

the Sri Chakra all these days. I smiled and before I said anything,

her husband came to the car and looked at us strangely!

Next day I took a picture of the Sri Chakra and showed it to her. Her

mouth fell open in disbelief. She excitedly cried, `Oh my God! This

is the picture I have been seeing all along!' Then she told me that's

why she was asking me about the rebirth and was wondering whether I

might have been born in India in my previous birth. I said `may be.'

She expressed her desire to visit my home and wanted to find out if

Amma or my daughter would object her coming. I told her they won't

say anything and she is free to visit my home at anytime. So one

evening she came home with her husband. That was the first visit of

hers several visits with her husband. In the beginning he would sit

in one corner and just listen to the conversation between his wife

and me. Later on slowly he also got involved in our conversation and

got interested in this subject. He was a Cleveland Browns fan and

they were losing all the time. He was asking me whether they would

win this year! I told him that I don't know. He told me to ask the

Mother and tell him! I said Ok. By some hook or crook that year the

Browns won the game and he was ecstatic. He really thought that the

Mother had something to do with the winning! He started to believe in

Her worship. He brought me several gifts as appreciation for my work!

He is a psychiatric nurse in a mental hospital and had to deal with

mentally insane people everyday. He told me that to calm these people

they used some sedatives in the night and he did not like that

practice. He asked me to give him some mantra. I taught him the

Bhuvaneshwari mantra, `Hrim.' Next few weeks he was repeating this

mantra while he was tending to these mentally insane people. To his

astonishment he noticed that the dosage he was giving to them to calm

them down started to decrease dramatically. He came and told me what

had happened and asked me whether I could make a recording of this

mantra and give him. I did. He would play the tape in the ward every

night. People who would be running around helter skelter would

quickly calm down hearing this mantra and quietly fall asleep without

any problem. Sedatives were not required.

Mother plays such miracles in other cultures too.

They have three children. When Pat met me she was expecting their

third one. She told me that her first two sons were very naughty and

unruly while growing up. She told me that she used to listen to my

mantra tape every day and night when she was pregnant and found out

that her third one is very calm and serene! She believes in the

effect of the mantra. That's the greatness of the Mother!

The year was 1879. This incident took place in the present

Afghanistan, near Musar-e-Sharif and Kandhahar. Emily was living near

Kandhahar with her husband. He had to leave the city to go and fight

in the war. So she was left alone at home. Slowly she started to

visit the Shiva temple nearby. Whenever she used to pray, tears would

roll down on her cheeks, worrying about her husband from whom she did

not hear anything for a long time.

Noticing this, the priest would ask her what was the matter. She told

him that her husband had been gone for a long time to fight in the

war and she did not know his fate. She was worried about his well

being. The priest told her to come to the temple next eleven days and

do the `eka-dasa-Rudrabishekam. She obliged and did the same coming

to the temple with great devotion and faith. The days passed quietly.

One fine day she received a letter from her husband describing the

battlefield and his actions.

" My dear Emily, sorry that I did not write to you all these days. I

was very busy with the war and we were losing the fight. Many of our

men have died and I thought I would also perish one day. For the last

eleven days the battle was very intense. Several men died, got

injured, but I remain alive without much injury on my body. Tenth day

battle went against us and I thought that was the last day for me on

this earth. On the eleventh day, an orange color cloth clad person

appeared near me with a trident in his hand, ash smeared all over his

body, beads around his neck and he fought standing next to me. The

enemies were defeated. After sometime I thought I would invite him to

my place for some drink and wanted to thank him for his help. He just

looked at me, laughed and disappeared! I searched for him in vain. He

just vanished into thin air I guess. I shall be coming home soon. "

When her husband returned home, Emily was very happy. She told him

about the temple she had been going to in his absence and wanted him

to come and visit the place. One day after taking shower, he went to

the temple with his wife. There he saw the picture of Lord Shiva and

he cried out, " oh! That's Him…that's Him… who came and helped me and

fought with me! " His wife told him that the priest had asked her to

do the abishekam for the Lord for eleven days and she did that

faithfully. While she was praying for her husband's good health and

safe return, the Lord had helped him to overcome the enemies.

This incident has been recorded in the Government diary of Ujjain.
