Dear Member,

Strictly speaking Mooka Panchashati has everything to do with Kamakshi of Kanchipura.

The 20th Acharya of the Kanchi Kamakoti Jagadguru Shankaracharya Parampara, whose poorvasharama name was called "Mooka Shankara" composed 500 lilting verses on Goddess Kamakshi Devi.

As far as my knwoeldge goes, "Mooka" means a "mute/dumb person".

This Mooka Shankara used to sit in the Sanniddhi of Kanchi Kamakshi Amba daily in dejection of his fate as many deried him for his dumbness/disability.

It so happened that one another great Srividya Upasaka used to pray Kanchi Kamakshi there daily in search of Kavithwam and pandityam(Eloquence and poetic ability).

It so happened that one day Kamakshi Amba deigned to give this Srividya Upasaka the boon he wanted and so came in the form of a beautiful damsel and asked him to open his mouth so that she could tranfer the Tambula rasa she had(the betelnuts and leaves chewed by Her and the essence thereof into His mouth). The Srividya upasaka being of a "pious" and orthodox nature, drove this "uncouth and immoral damsel" in anger!

But this "Mooka Shankara" who was sitting in idle depression there saw thia and opened his mouth(what did he had to lose?) and the damsel gave the tambula rasa to this dumb person's mouth who became in that very instant not only a great Pundita and a kavi but also a very spiritual person and also became the 20th acharya of the shankaracharya order.

The 62nd Acharya Sri Chandrashekrendra Saraswathy Swamigal(also called Periyawal) had composed and discused this and other stories in his "Siva Geetha Malika"(which discussed all the Divine leelas of Kamakshi and Lord Shiva).

Hope this much helps. For further information, you may refer to the official site of Kanchi Kamakoti peetha, I guess.

Jaya Kamakshi! Jaya Kanchipuravaasini!

Yours yogically,
