Respected Sriramji

Jai Bhuvaneswari

Eventhough I adapt to several methods (Worshipping deities at various

temples etc) still somewhere I get failed to control my mind and I feel

very bad that my mind wanders somewhere. Please guide me so that I too

become a least devotee of amba in this maanuda piravi. I know that

getting maanuda piravi is not easy , but I feel that I am not

fulfilling it to the noble cause, which I wanted to in addition to

performing my normal duties. Please guide me.

Thanks in advance.

Dear Srinivasanji,

This is a common problem encountered by anyone who is seriously into meditation.

The word to note is 'seriously'. There must be a non-serious seriousness. It is said meditation happens during the gaps between two meditations(Tibetan book of living and dying)

The problem here is that you are trying to "control" mind. It is impossible. Why? Because, you try to "control" mind with itself. In other words, there is a being(chit) which is true(sat) and which gives ecstatic bliss(Ananda which is falsely construed as happiness by many). Sat does not need the control apparatus of the mind. Control and regimen is the domain of the mind.

Being and awareness is the domain of this 'chit'. The more you try to control mind, the more monkey-like it becomes. It acts like a hungry dog tied to one end of the pole with a rope. The dog keeps moving round the pole fruitlessly. But if the dog just remains in one place without exhausting and then gathers its energy and pulls at the rope strongly there is a possibility for it to break. It is easier for a dog to break even an iron-chain than to control mind.

Everything runs by karma, this 'Maanida piravi' you have got is a fruit of past birth actions and your current leanings into spirituality is also because of your poorvajanma samskaaras and vasanaas, do not give any thought to such stuff and pressurize yourself. The more pressure you have to 'perform' the more you will fail.

When you sit in meditation. Just do two things for the next 6 months, you will be really surprised how miraculous is the simple advice, I have given you.

1. Watch your breath consciously--first while in meditation and then even after that say while working or doing your 'normal duties'. You will find how difficult this exercise it but then, you will be changed man and start getting solutions yourself. This looks like some za-zen or vippasana procedure but it all comes from our ancient India, why even our ancient tamil siddhas used to practice it in their Vasi-yogam.(''Irai enbadhu marai porul, Vasi enbadhu sivanin vaakkaagum')

2. Let your mind wander,' feel' your feelings, dont verbalize it, dont create a script around it dont even term it in any manner or be expressive about it and fritter away the moment. Just be aware and feel. Now, this is easier said than done, because the moment you start this exercise, your mind will start to play games as in

a. Not staying on one thought and thus confusing you with various emotions.Your feelings keep flitting.

b. The mind(or an inner voice, which you wrongly might misinterpret as your conscience) starts telling "This is a fruitless exrcise, let me concentrate on a powerful mantra, or an image, etc". Thus mind which is the greatest deception master, tries to lure you away from your flame of consciousness ('Chidaagni') and keep you deluded.

c. Fatigue.

What is needed here is persistence, keeping it cool('siddhargal parpadharkku pitthargal pol ayinum manadhaal chandrirargal enbaargal periyorgal') and not over-exerting.

Being a devotee of Amba too is in Her hands. She will take care each time your mind keeps flitting.I will not say surrender to Her during meditation as that again becomes another mind game and people keep playing with concepts like toys!

Just do the above two simple things and then when your mind is clear, mantra-japa or dhyana will automatically come.

Mountby making the five sensesinto a pestle.Escape by transforming A-kaaraminto the mortar.Cool offby letting desire be the form you grind.Trap the slippery mind.Gain strengthby remaining stilland then pulverize the mind completely.Isn't it tumultuouswhen you try to spoil it's work?Healby having both yogaand wisdom.Without knowing this, crores have died

Dear Sir,

It is very simple. The answer lies in your own query.

" How do I breath consciously? "

By being conscious of your breath.

To dilate further: Each time you breath, do you give significance to

that? No, you maybe talking to someone, you might be eating

something,etc.

Thus our whole lifetimes are spent without being aware that we are

even breathing.

Breath is the prana. Each time you give congisance to this minutest

aspect of inhalation or exhalation, you evolve in your consciousness

gradually.

This might sound very simple but it is really difficult. I know

people who after me syaing have tried it and said " I feel very afraid "

They are afraid because they don't want to be in touch with thier

being. Their egoic mind-state is preventing them from being and

pulls/pushes them to doing.

Watch your breath, Don't do anything.(Arunagirinathar has given the

greatest advice to gain moksha and that is " Summa iru " . But is very

difficult. Our mind is always propelled by prakriti into " doing "

something, it seeks one kind of toy, one kind of game and then gets

bored and seeks yet another. This rigmarole does not die even when we

choose one path, we get embroiled into choosing various sub-paths in

the path, involve into criticizing other paths and claim our path is

the greatest,etc...all plays by our egoic mind into making

us " religious " and bereft of true spirituality.)

Watch your inhalation. Watch the pause.(Don't be guided by people who

say, that pause contains God....*whew* again the egoic mind playing

its part here)

Watch with your mind's eye the exhalation.

As you keep doing it, see whether your mind wanders?

Yes, it will.

Initially, it will start observing the sound.. " oh this is soham

hamso....*whatever*...but these are again the pranks of the drunken

monkey.

Then it will get tired of the whole exercise, then it says " What is

this foolish effort? " ...

Be persistent.

Say to your mind... " Summa iru " (Be quiet), without saying

anything...with your being, stop the impulses.

Slowly this whole drama will be over and there will be implosion.

Summa Iru

Katru Mara

Marai-yin Maraiporul

Shreeram

P.S. I will reel out later Bhuvaneshwari Puja rituals later. You

might also contact Priyananda of our group who is big time into the

Bhuvaneshwari Upasana.
