Temples in Varanasi And Haridwar

Varanasi

The important Devi temples are

1. Maa Annapurna temple.

2. Maa Visalakshi temple. In Tamil Nadu they say Kanchi Kamakshi,

Kasi Visalakshi. But this temple is not well known locally. You can

ask for Natkottai chetti temple. It is known thus because it was

either erected or controlled by the Nattu Kottai Chettiar community

of Tamil Nadu.

3. Maa Durga temple- also known as Monkey temple because of the large

number of monkeys in the temple - 2 kms from old city.

4.Bharat Mata temple- dedicated to Mother India.

5. Maa Siddheswari temple

6. Maa Sankata temple

7. Maa Rajeswari temple.

The last three temples are mentioned in a book on Devi temples. You

can enquire around.

8. Maa Chinnamastha temple- it is mentioned by David Kinsley that

there is a temple of Maa Chinnamastha in the courtyard of a large

Durga temple in Ramnagar across the Ganges from Varanasi. You can ask

the boatman to take you across Gangaji (River Ganges is called

Gangaji) to Ramnagar and ask for the Durga temple. Elizabeth Anne

Benard also confirms this in her book Chinnamastha. She has mentioned

that it is a beautiful Durga temple.

Last though it is not a Devi temple do not miss Kala Bhairava temple.

It is one of the oldest and Sankaracharya wrote Kala Bhairava

ashtakam here.

Haridwar

As you know Haridwar is full of Ashrams and temples. The important

Devi temples are

1. Maa Manasa Devi - this temple is on top a hill. There is a ropeway

to the top.

2. Maa Chandi temple - on top of a hill across Gangaji on Neel

Parbhat. - You have to trek to this temple. May be there is a road

now. Enquire around.

Many of the Ashrams have new but beautiful Devi temples.
