Guest guest
I hope you are recieving all the replys that are being posted on this thread. This is not a subject that there is an instant 'correct' answer. As I said before there are " traditionally " 51 major pithas. I looked for the site that more or less had the 'easy answer' to this question but it looks like it has shut down. It was a link to a Moksha pilgramage and was part of <http.//www.allindiaguide.com> 'off the beaten path'.. Like many stories (for lack of a better word) there are many different opinions on the exact number of pithas. Various sources list 4, 12 , 18 , 24 , 51 and 108. Most have settled on the number as 51 major pithas. Of course as the study of these progresses over the course of conservatively 1,000 years with various dialects and scriptural texts and tranlations and of course regional prejudice the locations vary. If you ae truly interested the text by DC Sircar is still available. He has laboriously examined the subject. Again as a English speaking person our resources are limited by I have seen this book cited over and over in various bibliographies. Personally I 'pranam' at his feet. During my brief research which was interupted 'by events in my life', i changed my yatra plans for that year and instead of going to Bengal as I had planned I went to Nasik area an area that i am much more familiar with. I visited Saptashringi Devi, somtimes called Vani Devi. It was a Temple that i had been trying without success to visit for over 30 years. I fell 'in love' there. I mean really when it comes down to it we all just need 'one place' where the Guru or MAA manifests herself to us. So I would be so happy if people would help in some collection of knowledge concerning the pithas. But the answers to this is not to be obtained in one day. I always felt that it was Westerners who were impatient for 'instant gratification'. I am sometimes overwhelmed by the wisdom of this group. For me it is a privledge to participate. There is so much knowledge here. For things that for you are a matter of fact contain revaltions that i would have never discovered on my own. Last September i did " Char dham " . i was trekking alone at Tapovan above the Gaumuch glacier near gangotri. I fell (quite far) and broke my hip. I made my way to Rottuck near Delhi where I had surgery. I am still healing. I am back in America but so much of my heart is in India. JAI MAA FRANK Send FREE Valentine eCards with Greetings! Guest guest
Dear Group, The link below will take you to the 51 Pithas that were previously listed on the allindia.com site that is no longer in existence. I present these to the group as a source of information that is available. These are by no means the ultimate reference source on this matter. As I was doing my search I remembered that the information was not referenced under Sakta pithas but under the 51 Pithas of Parvati. That itself is a statement.
