Jai Maa

For several years I have been trying to find out the

significance of a particular picture of Maa Kaalii.

As you know, Dakshinaa Kaalii is depicted with sword

and severed head in Her upper and lower left hands,

while Her upper and lower right hands show abhaya and

boon-giving mudras.

However, there is a common variation on the picture of

Kaalii which shows upper and lower left hands holding

a severed head and a skull bowl catching the drops of

blood, while the upper and lower righ hands hold a

sword and trident.

Does anyone know what is the significance of this

iconographic variation? Is this another form of

Kaalii.

Any insight that might be offered to the group will be

deeply appreciated by me.

Jai Kaalii Maa!!!

From your description the image could be that of MAA SMASANA KAALI.

Maa Dakshina Kaali has her right foot on Lord Shiva whereas Maa

Smasana Kaali has her left foot on Lord Shiva. Maa Sharada Devi used

to worship Maa Smasana Kaali. The ornaments and Asthras in her hands

differ from Tantra to Tantra and so does the mantra.

Maa Kaali being the principal Goddess of the Saktha religion and

Saktha Tantras has more than 100 forms, Dhyana Slokas and mantras.

The popular Gayathri is

Om Kaliikayai cha vidmahe smasana vasinyai deemahi

thanno ghora prochadayat.

Jai MAA KAALI !!!
