Guest guest
Dear Family, Some time ago I posted a nice quote from the Devi Mahatmyam, and our good member Shankaree Ramatas asked me to please send more. Well, now I have found another in the same book that I think is worthy of being pointed out. In it, the Devas, oppressed by Sumbha and Nisumbha, are appealing to the Devi, in the course of which they say: " durgAyai durgapArAyai sArAyai sarvakAriNyai . khyAtyai tathaiva kR^iShNAyai dhUmrAyai satataM namaH .. " 5\ 12.. " Salutations always to Durga who takes one across in difficulties, who is essence, who is the authority of everything; who is knowledge of discrimination and who is blue-black as also smoke-like in complexion. " This salutation is addressed to Durga, yet describes Her also as " blue-black " which is a title of Kali. To me this establishes that Durga and Kali are the same Devi. This is an important point for me because the same scripture in other places treats them as separate and distinct Goddesses who interact with each other as the events of the story unfold; which was confusing for me until I noticed the above quote. Now I am able to enjoy reading Maa's story without getting into a confused theological quandary about whether they are two separate Devis or one Devi, because the scripture shows that both views can be correct at the same time. This book has been a great comfort and an inspiration to me. I think that all Sakthas of every kind who read it will find it speaks to them in some way. I hope this has been of some interest; as it has been for me. Jai Maa Kaali, Loladas
