Guest guest
Dear Saktha-family members, In south India, the worship of Devi in the form of Maariamma (Kali) is quite common. In fact, the images of people who walk on coals, and carry pots of milk atop their heads are associated with her worship. She is usually adorned with neem leaves and lemon-garlands. " Amman " is a title meaning mother-goddess in south India, and as such derives from " amma " or " mother. " http://www.templenet.com/Tamilnadu/images/maari2.jpg Recently, many movies have made here quite popular, especially Tamil movies where the Goddess appears as a character in the plot... http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/fr/2002/04/26/stories/2002042600910201.htm Does anyone know if there are books out there on this form of Devi whose worship is quite extensive? Guest guest
Dear Krishna Akilesh, Samayapuram Mahamariamman is my Dad's ishta devatha for many decades now. I have had the privilege of visiting many Mariamman temples in Tamil Nadu including the famous Punnai Nallur Muthu Mariamman temple in Thanjavur. Mariamman is usually referred to as Seethala Devi in Sanskrit. Search for books on Seethala Devi. Also, the famous Mariamman Thalattu which is a Kochhai Tamil rendition of a lullaby to the Devi is a good source of worshipping methods of this form of Devi.
