Guest guest
Kamakshya temple is on the outskirts of Guwahati, the capital of the Indian state of Assam. Guwahati has a large number of hotels, both of the budget and luxury variety. At the expensive end of the market, one could recommend the Indian Tourism Development Corporation run Hotel Brahmaputra, Hotel Nandan and Hotel Dynasty--all with three stars and over. Besides these, there are several budget accomodations. Most of the budget accomodations are to be found around the railway station/ bus terminal at Pan Bazaar. Kamakshya temple is well connected to the city by private mini-bus', larger city-buses as well as by taxis and autos (three-wheelers). Kamaksha is on the top of a steep hill, some people prefer to walk to the temple but there is a motorable road that will go all the way up to the temple gates. Kamakshya has traditionally offered blood-sacrifices to the goddess. Usually one sacrifices a black (without markings etc.) bufallo, or he-goat, but most people prefer to sacrifice a pair of pigeons because it is much cheaper. However, one can replace the blood-sacrifice by simulating the sacrifice using a vegetable such as a gourd. The temple priests (pandas) will let you know the various possibilities. Make sure you spend enough time at the temple because the views of the river Brahmaputra from the temple are fabulous. Apart from Kamaksha Guwahati also has a famous temple which is located in the middle of the river on an island but with the monsoons being so heavy it may not be possible to visit the temple. But find out once you get there, there are river ferry -boats that will take you from Paltan Bazaar river ghats to the temple.
