Well, we can agree about the humility but certainly not about " simple minded " !

As for, " she has no direct lineage, " lineages and external authority

do not impress me. There are worthy teachers within them, as well as

ego-invested ones, so what.

>I think it's the term " we " that needs to be watched here.

I am speaking of Ammachi devotees who Nora just characterized en

masse in very unfavorable terms, without making any exceptions: " that

you all wear with pride and show off with. Your status symbol. " She

says " you all, " and only in that context do i say " we. " I don't

believe Amma devotees on this list or elsewhere agree on everything,

about Amma's organization or our own spiritual orientation or path or

whatever. I certainly don't aspire to any party line, and in fact my

own path is not restricted to any one tradition.

On this list there is no status to be gained in talking about Amma or

her teachings. On the contrary, there is rather the risk of being

perceived as a pashu herd animal. Oh well. Can't worry about such

things. I am not looking for status...

Nora has a right to her opinion, i have a right to take exception to

comments i find offensive. We can move on.

Hi again, Max:

Thanks for the post.

I take note of the specific quotes you cite and leave it to Nora to

clarify -- her shift is beginning soon! ;-) I gave my take, but it

very well may be all wet -- certainly back-channel opinions are

running that way! ;-)

*** On this list there is no status to be gained in talking about

Amma or her teachings. On the contrary, there is rather the risk of

being perceived as a pashu herd animal. ***

On this topic I would like to comment. I think the body of opinions

that constitute " this list " at any given moment is an extremely

amorphous one and shifts with whomever is in the mood to talk. For

instance, last week the Ammachi-bashers were ascendant, not for the

first time, until we finally shut them off. It's an occupational

hazard of trying, as we do, to allow all sorts of opinion and

contrary voices have their say -- until such time as they degenerate

into mere abusiveness and sniping.

The overall tone of this group is not, I hope, exclusivist or

exclusionary. Kochu is a great and early devotee of Ammachi. Nora is

not a fan. Durga voiced her opinions a little earlier. I quite

honestly haven't studied Ammachi or her teachings; from what little

I've picked up here and there, she seems quite lovely indeed and

unmistakeably authentic. But I know nothing much of her organization

or her devotees (who are, as you say, probably too diverse a bunch

to characterize anyway).

But I would not like this group to be characterized as anti-Ammachi

any more than as anti-Amrita or anti-Sai or anti- any holy personage

whose teachings are at least generally in line with the purposes and

topic of this group. And certainly I would not want there to be any

impression that Ammachi devotees are " pashu herd animals " or

whatever. That is absolute nonsense.

*** Nora has a right to her opinion, i have a right to take

exception to comments i find offensive.***

You bet.

Best regards

I agree that the list is very mixed, which is a good thing. I just

wanted to address these herdish perceptions which have surfaced

before, and the unnecessarily insulting tone of the post in question,

and i'm done now.

DB, I think you do a pretty good job of moderating overall.
