Guest guest
Hello, I just finished reading a fiction by a Western author named Mercedes Lackey. I am not going to say her story is culturally accurate (it is a fiction after all), but it essentially is about a British-Indian female who learns sorcery. The villain in the story is a Kali priestess, BUT...I found one thing out. Kali's statue always had her eyes closed when this priestess did evil things in her name. When the evil priestess was defeated, Kali opened her eyes. The book made reference that Kali did not like the evil done in her name, and that was why the statue's eyes were closed when the villain tried to worship her through her evil deeds. Considering that Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom made things look bad for Kali ma, I thought this fantasy novel did a good job of revealing her benign nature through that symbolism. It shows that not all Western stories about different traditions paint them in such a bad light! Jai Ma! Sincerely, Christina H.
