Guest guest
I recently purchased a booklet by Karunamayi Ma for learning to chant the Sri Suktam with samputitas; this version is 16 shlokas in length. Going through the booklet, I noticed that the 16th shloka differs depending on the version: with samputitas or without. And looking online and in my Mantra Pushpam book, there are further shlokas not included. Looking at the page pointed at from the Devipuram website, http://www.srividya.org/slokas/HTML/sri_suktam.htm, there are 15 verses shown, with the 16th verse here actually being the Lakshmi Gayatri. Up to the 15th verse, the text given in the booklet seems to match the text on the Rajarajeswari Peetam website. The sixteenth verse in the booklet version without the samputitas is padmapriye padmini padmahaste padmAlaye padma daLayatAksI | viSvapriye visNu manonukUle tvatpAda padmam mayi sannidhatsva. The sixteenth verse in the booklet version with the samputitas is yaH SuciH prayato bhUtvA juhuyA dAjva manvaham sUktam pañca daSaScarañca SrI kAmaH satatam japet. If it makes any difference, the samputitas are the Maha Lakshmi Mantra from the Rig Veda, as well as the second verse from the Durga Saptashloki. Does which 16th verse is used, then, depend on whether samputitas are used? (This difference at the 16th verse is not mentioned at all in the booklet.) And what about the 16th verse as the Lakshmi Gayatri? Any suggestions, clarifications, and/or explications would be appreciated. Thanks, C. Guest guest
Jai Karunamayi! I heard it personally out of Karunamayi Amma's mouth how the Vedic Sri Suktam varies from the Samputita Sri Suktam which is Sri Suktam fenced with verses from the Durga Saptasloki (which is the essence of the Chandi) & the Rig Vedic Maha Lakshmi mantra. The Samputita Sri Suktam combines 2 unique energies of the Divine Mother => Durga Devi & Maha Lakshmi (from Vedic Maha Lakshmi Mantra, Chandi, and Sri Suktam). Samputita Sri Suktam in its entirety takes about 13 minutes, while the Sri Suktam itself takes about 3 and half minutes. Karunamayi Amma espouses us to chant Samputita Sri Suktam at the very beginning as it will light up chakras in the body like a Christmas tree and open channels for divine energy during sadhana. She says that it will take away poverty of all kinds (spiritual and otherwise) " daridrya duhkha bhayaharini Khatvadanya, Sarvopakara karanaya sadardra citta " . Also, verses vary as in last part of verse 5 of Sri Suktam which says " Tam padminim saranamaham prapadye alaksmirye nasyatam tvam vrne " , whereas in the Samputita Sri Suktam it says " Vrunomi " . Lastly, the cadence is different between the 2 mantras. Further, I wouldn't call myself an expert, but with all respect to what you are asking about additions or deletions of verses, all other differences within the Sri Suktam proper (16th shloka and some other end verses sometimes added or deleted by pandas depending on personal preference) are just superfluous differences (<= this is my own opinion and not Amma's).
