Paulie,

DB has two CD recommendations at the end of his Amazon booklist:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/richpub/listmania/fullview/17SX2T24MNOH1/ref=

cm_aya_av.lm_more

or

http://tinyurl.com/2on2oe

Shakti: Sacred Song from Southern India

Sudha Ragunathan

and

Ksetra Madurai

Nithyasree Mahadevan

The second listing at Amazon includes audio samples.

For videos of both artists singing, see

http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=leopoldbloom

I think that between the audio clips and the video,

you'll be able to see if either artist is your cup

of tea.

Indeed, DB's tastes are superb and his guidance is never wrong. I was rather

looking for

something I might be able to sing along to myself. A simple devotional perhaps.

I'd really

love to master the aarti. I'd like to do the puja myself at home, or at least

not be so

terribly lost at temple.

Hmmm. Do you like Krishna Das? He sings kirtan, mostly

(and with a rock-n-roll sensibility, :-), but perhaps?

You can see the lyrics at http://www.krishnadas.com/

and Amazon has sound clips. His devi-oriented stuff is

sprinkled across his albums; I think Pilgrim Heart has the most:

http://www.krishnadas.com/notes.cfm?CID=breathoftheheart & TID=breath3

For an Arati song, see 'Jai Jagadisha Hare' on _Door of Faith_;

soundclip at Amazon:

Das/dp/B00006I0AH/ref=m_art_li_4

For more in the same vein (i.e. mostly kirtan

by mostly Western folks, see:

and if you like that, you might like (a book):

On the Amma CDs,

Durge Durge Durge Jai Jai Ma is beautiful and easy to learn.

Also Jai Jagadambe Durge Ma.

You'd have to write them to find out what CDs they're on.

Krishna Das has a majestic and exaltational version of Jai Jagadambe

Durge Ma, a different song than the one above.

That reminds me! (thanks, Max)

Kali Mandir in Laguna Beach, CA sells

a Jai Maa Kirtan cassette (no CD available)

of very learnable Devi-oriented kirtan.

The lyrics booklet is also available, separately.

I believe these were recorded at the Mount Madonna

Center in Calif.; amateur singers.

Hey Paulie:

Wow! Thanks for the compliment! My head is floating high over the

Atlantic as we speak. :-p

Here is my suggestion: Get yourself a copy of Nithyasree Mahadevan's

beautiful CD, " Sanskrit Slokas. " Despite the unhelpfully non-specific

title, it is a full album of classic Devi hymns, and it's a steal at

US $1.99 here:

http://www.themahal.com/cgi-bin/mahal/10627?

Then go to the Celextel library, find the various hymns from the disc

(in Roman transliteration and English translation) and ... sing your

heart out. ;-)

http://www.celextel.org/stotrasdevi/

The only glaring omission from the Nithyasree disc I mentioned is the

mother of all Devi hymns (pun intended), " Mahishasura Mardini Stotram. "

My favorite version of that hymn is Sudha Ragunathan's, which I

believe you already have a copy of.

Hope that helps! And thanks again for your kind words ...

Paulie,

Looks like you've gotten a pretty diverse set of suggestions.

If you end up locating a recording that's exactly

what you were looking for, would you let us know?

(in the meantime, have fun with your search! :-)

Namaste,

Well, I went with the Sanskrit Slokas by Nithyasree and as DB indicated they are

lovely. I

don't think they are anything that I could master and sing to Devi myself.

I'm still tempted by the Amma ones but now I can't find the same website that I

originally

found that had the samples on it.

Oh well.

Wait, wait, that's what browser history is for. That and an embarrassing

confrontation with

the reality of just how *much* internet surfing you really do.

I found the site:

http://www.karunamayi.org/AmmaStore/home.php?cat=249

In case anyone else wanted to take a listen.

I love that this site offers samples. That made it easier to make a choice. I

finally decided

on the Durge Bhavani CD. I liked the sound of the selections and I feel like I

could possibly

master one or two of them.

I'm hoping that the CD includes lyrics and it would be really awesome if it

offered

translations as well. I'd settle for lyrics, though.

It does include the Jaya Jaya Durge Jagadambe.

Keep us posted.

My fingers are crossed, hoping for lyrics for you with the CD.

Namaste,

Ah the sweet silliness of wild optimism. I have my CD, which is great. The cover

pictured is

just a cardboard envelope, no insert, no lyrics.

So, I am downloading the CD and getting ready to learn the old fashioned way, by

listening

to the singer. Perhaps I will still try to cheat by looking up the lyrics

online. After all,

Sanscrit is not all that familiar to me, and easy for me to misunderstand.

I know that Devi forgives honest mistakes, but I would take pleasure in better

knowing

what I sing.
