Guest guest
Namaste, I just was watching an old movie: Jhanak Jhanak Payal Bauje. In it there was a dance contest and the story of the dance was that Shiva was going to do a dance to destroy the world but Parvati intervened with a dance of her own and cooled Shiva's temper. Has anyone heard of this story? Blessings, pr

Thus Parvati too is known as Laasyaswari : the graceful one.

Guest guest
Hi Max, I purchased it because it was a filmfare winner for 1956 and I was trying to find a way to explore more classic bollywood. I really enjoyed the classic dance scenes, the plot was somewhat predictable and thin, the style was, to me, delightfully old fashioned. The female lead is a strong character, very self directed even in the face of cultural opposition and I noticed that she was sometimes costumed in a more masculine fashion, which I found interesting. She takes the role of a devotee of Krisna, but seems to be dressed to refer to Shiva, her hair especially. There's a really interesting dance scene where she dances as Parvati that prefigures the final dance scene thematically, but not stylistically. Knowing that film in the U.S. was more liberal prior to WW II, then tightened up due to political and social pressure, I wonder if Indian film has experienced similar tightening over time. I'm not knowledgeable enough to do more than enjoy and speculate. So, the answer is, I did enjoy the movie and I'm glad it's a part of my collection...much more than other films I have purchased for the same reasons. pr , Max Dashu <maxdashu wrote: > > Would you recommend this movie? > > Max > > >I just was watching an old movie: Jhanak Jhanak Payal Bauje.
