Guest guest
Here are the captions for this week's featured photographs, located on the group's splash page, just below the Sri Chakra: / ***** Hindu monks, nuns and pilgrims take a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganges river and the Bay of Bengal during the festival of " Makar Sankranti " , here photographed at Sagar Island, about 150 km (93 miles) south of the eastern Indian city of Kolkata, January 14-15, 2008. In the center image, a woman dresses up as the Hindu goddess Kali as she begs for alms from pilgrims. " Sankranti " means change of direction, and Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the Sun from Sagittarius to Capricorn during the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere (uttarayana). It is at this time that the Sun begins its journey northward in the sky, and the days begin gradually lengthening in the northern hemisphere. All photos: REUTERS/Jayanta Shaw (INDIA).
