mangalai: auspicious Lady (LSN 970: SuvAsinyai)

senkalasam: reddish or generous kalasam (as in small pot like

structures on top of Hindu temple towers) (LSN 33: kAmesa-

premarathnamaNi-prathipaNa-sthanIyai)

muLaiyAL: breasted one

malaiyAL: She who resides in mountains or Who was born of the

mountains (LSN 634:

Sailendra-thanayAyai)

varuNa: of water

sangu: conch

alai: wave (of sea)

senkai: reddish arm

sakala: all

kalAmayil: She who knows all 64 arts, who is as graceful as a peacock

thAvu: jumping (from Shiva's head)

gangai: Ganga (river)

pongu: over flowing

alai: wave

thangum: (overflowing, wavy ganga) residing (on)

purisadayOn: He who wears His Hair up (Shiva)

pudaiyAL: She who has Shiva (as above) on Her (right) side (as in

ardhanArIswari)

udaiyAL: She who always has devotees (LSN 199: Bakthi-gamyAyai)

pingalai: golden colored

neeli: bluish colored

seiyAL: reddish colored

veLiyAL: She who appears to grace Her devotees or who is the sky

pasum: green

peNkodiyE: Lady whose body is like a creeper

 

O' Auspicious one! Who was born of the mountains! You are adorned

with beautiful, generous breasts, wearing bangles of conch shells on

Your reddish forearms. O' Graceful Peacock, You know all the 64 arts,

Who has Shiva with flowing Ganga from His hair as Your rightside. You

always have devotees, O' Golden colored one. You are also Neeli (blue

one, Neela Saraswathi), reddish colored (Kamala). I pray to Thee who

resembles a creeper (vine) in form.

This is so beautiful. Does it relate to the story of Durga born of the

Himalayas? What are

the color significances? I can understand golden, like the sun. I don't really

understand the

red or blue.

Each verse describes a few aspects of AbirAmi (of Thirukadayoor). But

it is not treating HER one particular aspect. The 100 stanzas of the

poem describes and worships HER as Tripurasundari (Lalita Parameswari).

Hence, it describes several aspects (amsam) of Lalita. Thus, one can

find definitions and stories from both SL and LSN (which describe

aspects of Lalita). Red is also related to the Sun as described in LSN

as " udyath-bAnu-sahasrAbhA " (meaning 1000 times brighter and redder

than the rising Sun). Reddish also refers to HER aspect as KamalA

(Lakshmi or as the color of Lotus) and blue refers to HER aspect of

Neela (blue) Saraswathi or Blue Tara (thanks to Kochu for his insight

into colors and corresponding aspects of HER).
