Icon blesses Hindu faithful in Yuba City

By Andrea Koskey

The Appeal-Democrat, California, U.S.

March 26, 2008

[For our group members who are Sri Karunamyi

devotees.]

Sri Karunamayi silently swept her right hand across the

heads of those waiting in line to see her.

Karunamayi, believed [by her followers] to be the

incarnation of the Divine Mother in the Hindu religion,

blessed 500 to 600 Hindus in Yuba City on Tuesday and

Wednesday.

Known as Amma, or " mother, " she visited several towns

and cities in Northern California as part of her world tour.

In the Hindu faith, the Divine Mother is believed to be the

feminine aspect of God. She is associated with the qualities

of compassion and forgiveness.

Roughly 300 practicing Hindus reside in the Yuba-Sutter

area, most of them from farming villages in India.

Services for followers of the religion, which features

worship of many deities, are held twice daily at the Sri

Narayan Temple on Franklin Road in Yuba City.

Wrapped in a bright orange sari, Karunamayi sat in the

Bonanza Inn convention center on an elaborately decorated

bench and listened to blessing requests.

On Wednesday, she granted personal blessings to followers

who spoke one-on-one with her. [....]

In her closing words, Karunamayi encouraged people to

give without expecting to receive.

" It's when you start to expect something you will be in

pain, " she said.

[....] Brett Joerger, organizer of the program, said people

come from all over the world to greet Karunamayi. [....]
