Indian women prowl the gumshoe beat

Amrit Dhillon

[Yeah, off topic. But interesting]

Having proved they can fly planes, transplant kidneys and

launch satellites, Indian women are storming yet another

male bastion where the required skills are less exalted -

poking around in rubbish bins for condoms and peering

through binoculars to catch adulterous couples in flagrante

delicto.

Women are increasingly turning to private detective work

because business is booming. The Indian capital alone has

an estimated 300 agencies.

In India's big cities, there are even all-women agencies that

offer everything from checking employee credentials for

multinationals to snooping on teenage girls whose parents

suspect they turn into Jezebels at night.

" It's never boring. Every case is different and you meet all

kinds of people with fascinating personalities and

problems, " said Taralika Lahiri, 48, who runs the all-women

National Detectives and Corporate Consultants in New

Delhi.

As a woman, Mrs Lahiri enjoys an advantage. Indian society

tends to take women at face value.

" Women don't arouse suspicion. People trust us and open up

to us. It's like having the door open all the time, " she says.

Mrs Lahiri also says it is easier as a woman to winkle

information out of cooks, drivers and maids - the main

source of information as they are all too familiar with a

family's dirty laundry.

For Bhavna Paliwal, 32, who runs Tejas Detectives from a

remote suburb in the capital, altering the way she speaks and

dresses before she approaches a maid for information is part

of the fun of the job.

" The hardest part of the job is telling a young girl excited

about getting married that the boy her parents have chosen

is a liar or womaniser. Often he's in a relationship with

someone else, or he's already been married once. All this is

shocking for them and it's hard to see their plans collapse, "

says Ms Paliwal, who uses camera phones, tiny video

cameras and voice recorders.

Given that arranged marriages are the bedrock of Indian

society, much of the work revolves around premarital

checks. Parents want to be sure that the man they have

chosen for their daughter is indeed the engineer that he

claims to be, rather than discover, post-nuptials and post-

dowry, that he drives a bus. [....]

Also important are " character checks " . Parents of boys want

to be sure the chosen bride-to-be is virtuous and chaste and

has no skeletons in the cupboard. Parents of girls want to

verify that the boy is not an alcoholic or conman.

Mrs Lahiri, who goes into the field on her motorbike, has

seen a wide range of human weaknesses and foibles in the

course of her work. What has struck her in recent years,

though, is a new streak of aggressive materialism which she

attributes to the unprecedented prosperity currently enjoyed

by the middle class. [....] " Some are more concerned with

bank balances than trying to find out if the person is decent

and honest, " she says.

Do they! Interesting how you can interchange your name from Ramana to

Yusoff Abdullah. I have known of one Yusoff Abdullah a social

psychologist........another character a pro-Zionist Palestinian Arab

living in the West Bank, using the pseudonyms " Yusuf Abdullah "

and " Yusuf Chouri " for this invented persona.

So may I ask humbly....... " yusoff Abdullah " why are you here?

I have a strong feeling that you pretend to be a devi devotee aka

amma devotee with an intention to sabotage her?

You know, I would have reconsidered that thought if the person responded or

defended themselves, even if in private.

I only hope that the person is not here to sabotage Devi and make some editorial

or article claiming to have been part of a " Goddess Cult of evil " or something

on those lines. I have seen quite a several fraud ex-devotees of other

religions trying to bash the religion they supposedly were once part of. It is

disrespectful. It is nothing more than pseudo-propaganda, sometimes escalating

to the level of real propaganda.

It is people who do this who make a really nice teacher assistant in one of my

classes, a Nair, feel like she has to keep her mouth shut in a free country

like the United States. To be honest, I personally do not feel like she has to,

or that I have to, keep my mouth shut about religious beliefs, etc. But because

of prejudice and the desire of others to attack other belief systems, it is what

happens (even when it technically should not happen).

Forgive me if I come across as accusatory. It is nothing personal whatsoever.

I am acting on the defense to simply inform you to please not try to isolate

Shaktism from the rest of the world via sabotaging it. If you just chose to

change your nickname and just listen, that is fine. Just whoever you might be,

please do not contribute to the psychological oppression, if not psychological

terrorism.

God bless.

Sincerely,

Christina

Maybe I've missed something here, but I am finding myself concerned about

someone being judged not on the basis of words or deeds even but their name,

real or virtual. This is sounding to me like racism, or similar prejudice.

Seeing this on a list such as this I find disturbing.

Dearest Karan..... I am concern too with your remark of this

word 'racist'. Yes! you have miss something definitely. Firstly do

you know who is " yusoff abdullah " and his other names he comes in ...

I know. Its not about because his name is muslim or anything, its got

nothing to do with it. I have my own reason why I post that message

and I have no obligation to explain it to you or anybody. If this

sound racist to you, then its too bad. I am who I am and I do because

I have a reason to. I dont know what's Christina reason. I do not

question your's.Each have our own.

I shall stop here.

There's many other disturbing people in here... welcome to the club

Namaste Karen,

I understand your concern, and at face value it would seem that I might have

came across as racist. I admit that I was placed on the defense, and probably

more on the defense than I should have been.

However, I also noticed that there was not an immediate response after Nora

addressed the oddness of the situation right away. I do not speak for her, but

myself. I speak for being concerned after noticing this, and then I got

defensive. Perhaps my ego got in the way, perhaps not. It was why I made my

last paragraph the way it was. I admit to being accusing.
